Hollywood is preparing to re-release some past hits, including Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in 3-D following the record-breaking success of Avatar. Studio executives are drawing up schedules of popular films that will be “retro-fitted” with 3-D technology after the science fiction blockbuster, directed by James Cameron, last week became the second highest grossing movie of all time.

A 3-D version of Avatar has driven ticket sales to more than $1.14 billion (£700m) in just three weeks; only Titanic, Cameron’s 1997 epic, has made more money at the box office. Kiwi-born Sharon Ali wants to show her Canadian-born family as many Kiwi sights as possible – including Matamata’s Hobbiton movie set and farm tour. “We arrived in New Zealand two years ago and I am determined for my family to see as much of the country as possible.

“The trip to the Hobbiton set was perfect for showing off rural New Zealand. “I went to school at Hamilton Girls’, so I have lived in the Waikato, but I have to confess we got a bit lost travelling to Matamata – we haven’t travelled much around those parts, but we got to the township and the information office gave directions back to the Andersons’ farm. Actually, let me clarify that… she’s hard for ME to shop for. She tends to like things like shoes and jackets and bracelets, basically stuff that’s alien to me.
