In case the new one-sheet posters, new trailer, live fan event, streaming fan event, interviews, magazine covers and actors around the globe wasn’t enough, Peter Jackson has posted Production Diary #12. You can see it right here. It looks to have some up-front action and then focuses on post-production. The behind-the-scenes team, as always has produced an excellent look behind the curtain, this one checking in at eight minutes long. All the usual subjects are there, like Andy Serkis, Lee Pace, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Jed Brophy and on and on. Enjoy!

Desolation of Smaug soundtrack special edition As you probably know by now, the closing credits song for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a tune entitled I See Fire by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.

At yesterday’s Fan Event, Peter Jackson said Sheeran became involved in the production after his daughter Katie introduced the artist to her parents after attending one of his shows back in March/April.

“She said that I just had to listen to him, and that he could be the perfect fit for the end of the film… and she was right.”

It was quite a good song, but it doesn’t quite capture the magic of, say, ‘May It Be’ or ‘Into the West’, but few songs can. It’s a folk/pop ballad about Thorin’s determination to win back Erebor at any cost. Thorin_Oakenshield While Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. were treating some very lucky fans to 20 minutes of previously unseen footage from The Desolation of Smaug, they were also releasing a new sneak peek for the film onto the web.

The three-minute sneak peek features some all-new scenes, including a few that the folks at the Live Event did not get to see — even in the extended footage. At least in Wellington, we saw trailer #2 instead to kick off the event.

So it wouldn’t be entirely correct to say this is a cut-down of the footage (of which we will have a detailed and spoiler-filled report soon!) — it feels like a trailer in its own right.
