ianmckellen.jpgBoard member diedye alerted us to this article at “Varsity” about a new book by Sir Ian McKellen and an appearance he’s making at The Octagon this Monday:

“Sir Ian McKellen is launching a new book about the Marlowe Society, of which he was President whilst reading English at Cambridge in the Sixties. He’s written the foreword, and now he wants to talk. The voice on the other end of the telephone line is eerily familiar, and terribly grand. McKellen is keen to discuss the book: “It is important for wider readership because of the influence the Marlowe Society has had on the professional theatre world,” he observes – an influence largely to do with their “shared approach” to the Elizabethan dramatic verse that is their area of interest.

New Line Cinema LogoKristin Thompson has a wonderful new article up outlining the success of ‘The Golden Compass’ overseas, and more relevant to Tolkien fans, news about the New Line Logo appearing before the ‘Hobbit’ project:

This tends to confirm what previous coverage has hinted: that New Line will be allowed to make The Hobbit itself (in a co-production with MGM) rather than turning the project over to Warner Bros. This, coupled with Anne Thompson’s recent remarks that Mark Ordesky will likely supervise The Hobbit and its untitled companion film, suggests that fans may have less to worry about than they thought. Time Warner and Warner Bros. may recognize that it’s best not to tamper with success. Keeping the circumstances for this new project as close to those of the LOTR trilogy as possible offers the best chance for lightning to strike twice.

Mark OrdeskyVariety columnist Anne Thompson has an excellent article on the longer, bigger picture of New Line Cinema and where “The Lord of the Rings,” films fit into that history. As part of the story she shares a small tidbit about a familiar producer that might be on board and yet another confirmation that Guillermo del Toro is still the likely to direct the two films that will tell the story of Bilbo Baggins and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Thanks to Compa_Mighty for tracking down the news. Read the full story right here.

Epleterte sends us the snippet from Variety’s article ‘Warner Bros. gobbles up New Line’: “The Hobbit” has Guillermo Del Toro in talks to direct, and the picture will be unaffected by the ouster of Shaye and Lynne. Though the films won’t be scripted until a director is hired, and Jackson wraps “The Lovely Bones,” the expectation is that the films will be ready for release for Christmas 2011 and 2012. Harry Potter will have wound down at WB by then, and the corporation will surely welcome another fantasy franchise that has an eager global audience waiting. New Line will distribute domestically, while MGM has international rights.

From Variety: New Line’s 40-year run as an independent studio ended Thursday when Time Warner said it would fold the company into Warner Bros. New Line will become a unit of Warners, maintaining separate development, production, marketing, distribution and business affairs operations. Warner Bros. gobbles up New Line

Elijah WoodEntertainment Weekly has posted a listing of the top thirty actors/actresses under the age of 30. And guess what? Elijah Wood makes an appearance.

The Lord of the Rings franchise made Wood a megastar, but the actor has used his box office power for good instead of evil in off-beat movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Everything Is Illuminated (2005).
