Things are looking up for those of us who are hoping to see Sir Ian McKellen return to the role of Gandalf in The Hobbit. Many of you have pointed us to the Q&A Sir Ian posted on his blog today:
“Q: Have you been approached yet by Peter Jackson or anyone else about reprising your wonderful role as Gandalf for the two upcoming “Hobbit” movies. I read that principal photography begins in 2009, and I can’t imagine those movies without you!
A: Encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn’t imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn’t yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!”

TheOneRing.net reported here at the end of January that Guillermo del Toro was 99 percent sure to direct “The Hobbit”. Since then the Tolkien Estate filed a lawsuit against New Line Cinema (a copy of which can be found here) and the movie studio has been folded up and put in the pocket of its owner Warner Bros. and its bigger parent Time Warner Inc.
After all the speculation and angst, the director of two “Hellboy” films (the second set for a July 11 release) still seems to be the top choice for director and despite the legal uncertainty, the quiet movements by the key players seem to suggest the film will still be made and sooner rather than later. So in this season of waiting, TORn was finally able to contact the fan-friendly director.

Compa_Mighty writes: Not a huge thing, but The Hobbit was formally mentioned as one the upcoming MGM franchise movies, in the press release appointing Mary Parent “Chairperson, Worldwide Motion Picture Group at the studio”.
“MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises – the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

deej sends along this link to an AP/CNN article claiming that there will be 2 Hobbit themed films from Warner Bros./New Line, and filming is set to begin next year. She writes, I was reading this article about the 7th Harry Potter film being split into 2 films, and came across this: “Another famous Tolkien tome, “The Hobbit,” is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.” Read the entire article here.
