Gotta love the return of our Spies to the wonderful sets of Middle-earth! Ringer Spy Periadoc Took sends in the following report from the Hobbiton set in Matamata:
I was in Matamata this weekend and went to Hobbiton, truth be told I wasn’t extremely surprised to see these upgrades but still a good sign.
Not only have they started putting plywood screens with spraypainted “hobbit hole” openings on them as per these pictures, but as you can see they have also planted new trees that will then be relocated and used for the set, the grass here is what they used for thatching as well during the movies, so once again a great sign of things moving on.
They have also, within the last weeks started strengthening the ground around Bag End and put wooden supports up, it seems things are all getting set for a start sometime of the middle of next year!

News is all over the place today about changes at the top of MGM, one of the studios co-financing and co-producing “The Hobbit.” There are lots of stories that tackle the business side of things. The New York Times takes a crack as does the L.A. Times while The Wrap looks at a possible takeover while Variety looks at Hollywood’s reaction and The Geek FreePress examines what it might mean for “The Hobbit,” calling this change the possible dragon for the film.
Kristin Thompson also weighed in with two seperate blog posts found here and here.
If anybody in our spy network has any further info of what this might mean, please send us word at SpyMaster@TheOneRing.net.

UPDATE: These rumors about “The Hobbit,” contradicted a lot of what Peter Jackson has said on the record often and in front of lots of cameras and reporters. We believe what PJ said rather than what somebody is claiming came from a “reliable source.” We also want to remind readers that Market Saw has reported some “facts” before which turned out to be incorrect. Check out this 2007 report which claimed that he knew Jackson would definitely be directing “The Hobbit,” in 3D not long before it was announced that he wasn’t. Many media members, including our own staffers, heard Jackson only weeks ago say there were no plans to do “The Hobbit,” in 3D and there absolutely no plans beyond the currently planned two films. Things can change but in this case, we doubt it very much. Further our own inside source, and somebody who really knows how the films will be shot (who isn’t Peter Jackson) wasn’t aware of an 3D plans.
Rumors abound at Marketsaw.com today: Continue reading “And from the wild Hobbit Rumor Front…”

Who will star as Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit”? You can cross one name off the list: Daniel Radcliffe, of “Harry Potter” fame, says he has no interest in any new project with “any wizards in it.” “I’d have to say, ‘Thanks but no thanks,’ not that anyone has asked me,” the 20-year-old actor told me last week in England. “Honestly, I don’t think they would want me anyway, it’s just too close. Whatever I do next, I don’t think there will be any wizards in it!” More..

There is a very informative article in the Wall Street Journal today that covers the past and upcoming projects of Peter Jackson. There is a particularly interesting tidbit on his decision to not direct ‘The Hobbit’ flims:
Mr. Jackson is co-writing and producing an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” but he’s handing the directing reins to Guillermo del Toro, known for his fantastical hit “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
“In some respects, I’m still not sure if I made the right decision in not directing, because I’m enjoying it so much,” Mr Jackson says of “The Hobbit.”
Thanks to forum member Loresilme for the heads up and you can read the full article through the following link. [Read More]
