Ed writes: Hello, just last week I visited the Hobbiton set and in the distance I saw a man in a white shirt and hat with grey hair. I knew it was Dan Hennah. I could also sort of guessed and could tell that it was Brian Massey standing next to him. As the tour got closer I found out I was right. I went up to Brian and said “Are you Brian?” I think he was a little surprised that I knew him. No one else in the group even knew who Dan was, shame shame. I shook his hand and then met Dan and shook his hand. We had a quick chat and they were super kind and friendly. Continue reading “Hobbiton Set Visit Report”

British actor James McAvoy was set to star with Seth Rogan in I’m With Cancer, directed by Jonathan Levine who was behind The Wackness.  But according to MTV, he has now dropped out of this “for personal reasons” and has been replaced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead.  Rogen released a statement confirming this casting change and explained a bit about what happened.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyone’s control have taken James away from the project, but, with James’s blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the [lead] role of Adam. We all look forward to working with James in the future.”

FirstShowing.net writes it like this:

Gordon-Levitt is REALLY stepping in last minute, as this had already started shooting up in Vancouver. The production has been temporarily halted and will resume again next week. It looks like McAvoy dropped out part of the way in for some BIG reason – either something personal or maybe he was finally cast as Bilbo in The Hobbit?

This tidbit is sure to raise a few eyebrows from Middle-Earth fans scanning news wires for anything potentially related to filming of The Hobbit.  The initial article is here on MTV.

Rumors The Hobbit might be filmed in 3-D have been around for some time and dismissed often by Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson .  Even last fall, del Toro stated on the TORN message boards:

“As a co-writer and director of this film … let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now.

However, he did add this caveat:

If after “Avatar” the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I’ll let it be know here at TORN because that’s the proper way of doing things.

True to his word, del Toro has now added an update via the TORN forum:

I wouldn’t read much on it just yet, but now, after all this time, after AVATAR doing the Box Office it did, we have had enquires from above about The Hobbit being in 3-D. No impositions or heavy leaning. Just enquires. Just fulfilling my promise to let you all know if discussions ever started.  Cheers, GDT

So while there is no confirmation on filming in 3-D, there is certainly discussions under way.  Add your comments to the TORN forums here!

Just when things seemed slow, we get a report on a possible casting rumor for Bard! The rumor comes from Ringer Enidan who suggests Clive Standen (Doctor Who, BBC Robinhood) is one of the names being considered for Bard in the upcoming Hobbit Films. Enidan writes:

I have heared that Clive Standen not Richard Armitage is on a list for Bard the bowma. They both appeared in BBC Robin Hood but Clive Standen who played Archer (Robin Hoods appropriately named brother) was an expert archer/swordsman and horseman. So it makes sense if you look him up on imdb you can see he is connected / linked to pirates of the Caribbean 4 so maybe he is in contention for the hobbit? I have not seen this list but i have a reliable source working in casting.

Take it for what is is, a rumor. What do you think of the possiblities? Is Clive a good choice for Bard? Discuss it in our forums and let your voice be heard! [Wikipedia Listing] [IMDB]

Jason Killingsworth writes: Wayne Barlowe gets paid to make your eyes pop out of your skull. The wildly talented science fiction and fantasy artist/author designed the creatures for James Cameron’s Avatar. He’s done concept art for a number of other Hollywood blockbusters, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hellboy and most recently Peter Jackson’s two-part, big-screen adaptation of The Hobbit. But even though he’s done reams of work for the film industry, it was his vivid reimagining of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno—the appropriately titled Barlowe’s Inferno—that made him the perfect candidate to work on Visceral Games’ new hack-and-slash action title, which also just so happens to be inspired by the late Italian poet’s masterpiece. We jumped at the opportunity to talk to him about his artistic journey into the underworld, his approach to creating the wildest mythical beasties imaginable and what we can expect from The Hobbit films. Niels writes: I was at the Poolburn Reservoir in the south-island this morning enjoying the scenery where the burning Rohirrim village was shot.

On our way over there through the Ida Valley I already spotted a helicopter, since we’ve seen loads of them on our trip so far I didn’t think anything of it then. But when we were at the Poolburn Reservoir I climbed up on one of the rocks to get a better view of the reservoir below, and the helicopter returned and made a very low pass alongside the reservoir.
