You may recall Emil Johansson as the brains behind the LOTRProject, which documents Middle-earth in numbers. Since Emil was eleven years old he has been passionate about J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. He’s also a photographer and engineering student. Here he performs a TEDtalk about how LOTRproject was a catalyst for his creativity and why people should pursue their geeky projects. Desert Island Supply Co. is a new Birmingham-based creative writing program for kids (it’s very similar to 826 Valenciain San Francisco). To celebrate their Grand Opening on Saturday, November 17, they will be hosting The Hobbit Read-a-Thon. That’s right, all through the day, they’ll be having an out-loud, non-stop reading of J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic childrens’ tale.
Read-a-thon participants can sign up to read for five-minute slots. The event is open to readers of all ages, and they say that costumes are welcome. If you live in the vicinity and can make it there on the day, Desert Island Supply Co. invites you to sign up to read as an individual or as part of a group.
The reading begins at 9 am. Other events planned for the grand opening party include live music and storytelling, balloon mapping, a “second-breakfast menu” writing booth, pin-the-tail-on-Smaug and other crafts and games. Food and drinks will be available all day.
Festivities will take place at DISCO headquarters at 5500 First Avenue North, in Woodlawn. Thanks to Ringer Sivad Will for the heads-up on this very worthy cause!
Back when The Lord of the Rings movies came out, there were promotional tie-ins at libraries in America, encouraging those inspired by the films to try the books! Now, the American Library Association has released a similar campaign for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The poster shows Bilbo reading his contract, with Galadriel, Gandalf, Thorin and Company in the background, and reads, ‘Take an unexpected journey – read’. Bookmarks and buttons are also available. Let’s hope these films create a whole new legion of Tolkien fans, who eagerly go back to the source and open up a book! Thanks to Ringer Michael S for letting us know about this!

As fans impatiently wait for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, one journalist in Middle-earth – ahem, in New Zealand – has written a great article which reminds us of the humble beginnings of this extraordinary tale. When Professor Tolkien jotted down those few, simple words – ‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit’ – it was indeed, as Gandalf might tell us, ‘like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche…’ When did you first encounter Middle-earth? Relive those memories with this charming article.
