Over the past few years, The Lord of the Rings franchise has gone silent. There was a time when the world of Middle Earth was on the forefront of everyone’s mind. The film franchise was doing gangbusters in the theaters, and the books were at the top of the bestseller lists. On the gaming front, LOTR was doing pretty well, with a variety of games spanning genres from action to real-time strategy performing quite well. However, once the films had ended, interest slowed to a crawl and the games faded out of memory.
Now, it seems that Tolkien’s world has gotten some renewed vigor. Peter Jackson’s films based on The Hobbit are finally in production, and Warner Bros. Interactive and Snowblind Studios have unleashed a brand new game set alongside the books, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. More..

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unveils the launch trailer for the November 1st videogame release, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Developed by Snowblind Studios, this action RPG introduces a new adventure to Middle-earth’s canon, with a new story deeply entrenched in the hallmarks of The Lord of the Rings: strength, courage and fellowship.
Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has released the first of four new videos discussing the cultural phenomenon of The Lord of the Rings, as well as how The Lord of the Rings: War in the North fits within this world. This video features commentary from well-known faces from the entertainment industry discussing their personal affinity for The Lord of the Rings.
Film stars Dominic Monahan and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings) discuss exploring this world in their childhoods; actors Brian Posehn (The Sara Silverman Show) and Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory) speak to its dominance within the fantasy genre, and gaming experts Alison Haislip (G4) and Miri Jedeikin affirm The War in the North’s authenticity, as well as noted Tolkien scholar, Corey Olson. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and WaterTower Music are pleased to announce the November 1 release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Original Video Game Score by award-winning composer Inon Zur. The soundtrack will debut day and date with the Action RPG video game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. After three highly acclaimed performances of the music at E3, Inon Zur has continued the tradition of iconic The Lord of the Rings music and crafted an epic and beautiful nineteen track score to the game, recorded at famed Abbey Road studios in the U.K.
“Composing the music for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North was a very inspirational, creative process,” said Zur. “The story is very compelling, and this had a direct influence on my music. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment releases three new video vignettes for the November 1 game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. In each of three, one of the heroes in the brutal battle ahead is featured, with three facets of their character featured – the upgrading of skills, their inherent abilities, and their methods of defense.
Farin, the Dwarf warrior. Andriel, the elf lore-master. Eredan, the human ranger. Each of these vignettes focuses on not only their actions and abilities in combat – showcasing their various long and short range attacks against Middle-earth’s most detestable creatures – but spotlights the abilities innate to each race and the navigation of their skill tree, giving a glimpse of what each character is capable of.
