Games Workshop ROTK Titles!

Available today in America are the latest series of minatures from Games Workshop. Here are some selections from the press release

05-03 THE RETURN OF THE KING $40.00 ($60.00 CAN)
The Battle of Helm’s Deep is Over – The Battle for Middle-earth has begun!
Following on the releases of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers games, The Return of the King mirrors the events of the forthcoming film of the same name. It will take players through the key events of the movie such as the fighting at Minas Tirith, the battle at the Black Gates of Mordor, and the culmination of Frodo’s quest to destroy the Ring. Just as the film raises the action to new heights, the action in the game also rises with the inclusion of new rules, warriors, and scenarios.

The Return of the King adds greater depth and detail to the previous games with 12 new scenarios that allows players to re-create the events of the third film. The 176 page, full color rulebook also includes a comprehensive forces section that gives players all the information you need to field warriors from any of the films. From older characters such as Isuldur to newer ones like the Mouth of Sauron, from the noble High Elves to the brutish Mordor Trolls and the horrific Shelob, players will now be able to draw on an incredible variety of characters, warriors, and monsters for their armies. New rules also cover using banners and musicians in games as well as special combat tactics such as firing massed volleys at the enemy. The rulebook also includes The War of the Ring, a special section presenting an additional 5 scenarios covering the great battles raging throughout Middle-earth plus a new character to use in them.

Exciting New Miniatures for the Game
Over the coming year, Games Workshop will be releasing many fantastic new models to support the game. From Aragorn the King to the twisted Gorbag, from the Knights of Gondor to the Mordor Uruk-hai – players will see a wide variety of new miniatures adding extra depth to their armies. New warriors such as the Eastlerlings, monstrous characters such as Shelob, and heroes such as Denethor will be arriving to bolster forces on both sides.

The new game itself will come with great new plastic models, including 24 plastic Mordor Orcs and 24 Warriors of Minas Tirith, each force armed with a variety of weapons. Players also get new plastic scenery, evocative of the unique appearance of Middle-earth as seen in the motion pictures. Future issues of Games Workshop’s monthly hobby magazine White Dwarf will feature painting and modeling advice along with new scenarios and gaming material to further expand the game.

With the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tabletop battlegame and associated releases, players are seeing but the third installment in The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Though this film brings the epic trilogy to a conclusion, these releases are only the latest for The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game! Coming months will be seeing even more via White Dwarf magazine and new supplements, taking the action even farther in scope. Players can be assured that they can look for many years to come of miniature gaming in Middle-earth!

These new sets come complete with plastic models, starter paints pots, paint brush, and painting guide. Each contains either 12 Mordor Orcs or 12 Warriors of Minas Tirith along with 6 paints designed for painting the models inside. As they include everything needed to get started with painting miniatures, these make for great presents and figure sets for new players.

05-27 WARRIORS OF MINAS TIRITH $20.00 ($22.00 CAN)
The men of Minas Tirith have lived their whole lives under the shadow of the each and have never faltered. It is through their valor that the lands beyond Gondor have been kept safe from Sauron’s armies.

This box set comes with 24 of these new plastic infantry models, armed with bows, spears, shields, and swords.

05-28 MORDOR ORCS $20.00 ($22.00 CAN)
Orcs are the foulest creatures to walk Middle-earth. A vile race of black-blooded creatures, Orcs are the chosen slaves and soldiers of Sauron the Dark Lord. Their natural predisposition towards violence and weak wills makes them ideal for his evil purposes. In the land of Mordor where Sauron holds sway, vast legions of the foul creatures gather for deployment in the coming war.

This box set comes with 24 new Plastic Mordor Orcs, armed with swords, bows, spears, and shields.

05-29 HEROES OF THE WEST $40.00 ($55.00 CAN)
This set comes with new models of Aragorn, Eomer, Gandalf, Faramir, Legolas, Gimli, Eowyn, Merry, and Pippin (the latter three all in armor now!). These stalwart defenders stand against the forces of Mordor in the battle to protect the White City and the hope of all Middle-earth. This set of characters for The Return of the King is sure to be popular for both players and collectors alike.

Decipher ROTK Press Release!

Get An Advance Look Into the World of Middle-earth on November 5th
When The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game Begins
A New Chapter with The Return of the King

Newest Base Set to Hit Stores Worldwide Weeks Before the Stunning Final Installment of the Epic Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy Unfolds on December 17th

(Norfolk, VA-September 16, 2003)-It all began with The Fellowship of the Ring as Frodo Baggins and his Hobbit friends embarked on a journey unlike anything they could have ever imagined. The journey then continued with The Two Towers as the Fellowship of Nine disbanded in various forms, each encountering adventures that would bring them closer to the evil lurking within Middle-earth. Now, J.R.R. Tolkien fans around the world anxiously await New Line Cinema’s theatrical release of The Return of the King, the final chapter that is sure to be the most highly anticipated film of Peter Jackson’s epic dramatic trilogy.

Decipher is proud to bring this electrifying chapter of the trilogy to life with the latest base set for The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game: The Return of the King. Available worldwide on November 5th, The Return of the King will tell the tale of Aragorn – revealed as the hidden heir to the Kings of the West – as he joins with the forces of Gondor to take down the armies of Sauron, while Frodo races to destroy the One Ring at Mount Doom. With breathtaking new images from the film featured on 365 new cards for new characters, sites, and themes, this set is sure to be a must-have for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson’s trilogy, and TCG players alike.

The Return of the King also introduces exciting, new gameplay mechanics that represent the increasing threat of the shadow of Sauron. “Threats” are a new mechanic that presents players with an activated effect using wounds that threaten every Fellowship companion when just one dies. “Initiative” is an innovative new mechanic that activates powerful cards that key off of the cards a player has in hand. This will discourage the Fellowship player from playing every card possible to survive and will also add new discarding strategies for the Shadow player in order to win initiative.

“The Lord of the Rings trilogy has given us an opportunity to take an exceptional storyline and bring it to life in a format that can convey all of the dramatic twists and turns that are inherent to the plot,” said Decipher Senior Game Designer Tom Lischke. “Although The Return of the King is the final chapter in the film trilogy, this base set is the beginning of yet another enlivening block for the trading card game – which introduces even more new characters and mechanics. And, unlike the film, it won’t end here. We have plans for new expansions for The Lord of the Rings TCG for years to come.”

Players will be able to participate in release day events on November 5th. Retail locations worldwide will participate in these tournaments where prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. In addition, a special Release Day card will be presented to all competitors.

This 365-card base set contains: 121 rare cards; 121 uncommon cards; 121 common cards; and two starter-only premium cards.

The Return of the King will be available in the following product configurations:

*63-card Starter Decks: Starter decks will be available in two versions, Éomer and Aragorn. Each deck has three random rare cards, 2 premium cards, and a rulebook. MSRP: US $10.99

*Booster Packs: 11-card packs will include 1 rare plus a mixture of common and uncommon cards. Foil cards will be found in approximately one out of six booster packs. MSRP: US $3.29

As with previous The Lord of the Rings TCG cards, all cards in The Return of the King will receive a foil treatment in a parallel set.

The Lord of the Rings TCG: The Return of the King set continues the mission introduced with The Fellowship of the Ring, which introduced the top award-winning trading card game of 2001 and 2002. Players try to win the game by advancing their Ring-bearer to the end of the adventure path; killing the opponent’s Ring-bearer; or corrupting the opponent’s Ring-bearer.

Just in time for New Line Cinema’s December 17, 2003 theatrical release of the third and final
installment, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, look for the new base set of The Lord of the Rings TCG in November when The Return of the King releases in stores worldwide!

LOTR Game “Movies” Reviewed

Hugh Hancock, the Artistic Director at Strange Company recently sent us an email about the ‘movies’ in the Two Towers Playstation game:

‘We’ve got something kinda unique for you: “games from films” site reviews not the gameplay but the “movies” in the Two
Towers Playstation game. is a site focused on movie-making in computer game
engines. In this review, we’re looking at the way that the game blends between real footage from the Lord of the Rings movies and the “Machinima” footage from the game – Lord of the Rings moments created inside the PS2’s graphics engine.

Here’s an excerpt:

“As far as how it stands as an extension to the films, “Two Towers”
does digress from the plot of the films at times, in order to fit in more battles, but is otherwise fairly faithful. The “flashback” plot
mechanism is very nice, and gives the game a subtly different story arc, but the game
creators do occasionally seem to be struggling to find enough action
from the films to fill out their game. However, there’s nothing that really stands out as blatantly changing the story or feel of things, Gandalf’s use of very “computer game” magic in one of the levels and the “Suicide Bomber Orc” characters notwithstanding.”‘

Ardan Nights

Hail and well met all!

[Ardan Nights]
is a project which is dedicated to bringing a Middle-earth, that strictly adheres to Tolkien’s works, to Neverwinter Nights.

The project has been running for over four years. And
progress has steadily been made. We hope to go live with
our first module, Bree-land before the end of the Summer.

Bree-land encompasses the areas of Bree and the surrounding
lands, including the Barrow Downs, South Downs, Old Forest,
Midgewater and the Weather Hills. This comprises of roughly
151 16×16 areas and also 164 interiors.

But this is not all, that we have accomplished in the last
year since NWN was released, major customisations have been
made to the engine, with our own set of classes and races and
replacing the NWN magic system with our system of Songs.
There has been other custom content made ranging from a
complete selection of new PC heads, relevant monsters
and creatures from Middle-earth to a new tileset.

We are dedicated to an all encompassing Role-playing
environment, so our work is not only geared to the
adventurers, much work has gone into more “normal”
professions in Middle-earth, including craftsmen and

We recently relaunched our website with a completely new
design, which is hopefully easier to navigate and easier
for a visitor to find the relevant information that they
may be looking for.

LOTR trivia game testimonial

Good morning! I don’t know if you’ve seen this trivia game that Fantasy Flight Games has produced, but it is excellent! My husband got a copy for his birthday yesterday and we played it last night until far too late. 🙂 I’m a huge LOTR fan and a huge trivia fan, and this game satisfied both aspects completely!

The questions are very specific, for one thing, which I really enjoy. They’re often taken word for word from Tolkien’s text. And there’s a good range from mildly difficult to bang-your-head-against-the-wall stumpers. Best of all, you can customize the game depending on how skilled the players are! Each question has 4 multiple choice answers, one of which is right and one of which is in brackets. If you want an easy game, you skip the answer in brackets so the person only has 3 answers to choose from. If you want it a little harder, you offer all 4 answers for the person to choose from. And for the real expert, you can just read the question, without giving the possible answers at all… 🙂

There’s also a game board and tokens, if you want to play the actual game instead of just firing questions at each other. 🙂 I’m not usually impressed with game boards for trivia games, because they often seem contrived and pointless, but in this game, they really do quite a good job of recreating the challenges involved in the quest of the book. And it’s illustrated by Ted Nasmith, so it’s visually stunning as well.

You take the role of Frodo, and the game board shows all the major locations you go through on your quest. You have to pay “resource” tokens to move to the next area (fighting tokens, walking tokens, One Ring tokens), and when you get there, you have to answer trivia questions or pay more resources or both. There are also gift tokens, which you can use to counteract the effect of getting a question wrong or having to pay extra resources. Slightly convoluted to explain, but once you’re into the game, it flows very smoothly and is quite intuitive in its rule structure.

If your only exposure to LOTR is the movies, you’re probably in for a frustrating time, because so many of the questions are nit-picky about something that was only mentioned once in the book (i.e. the name of Nimrodel’s lover.) But if you’ve read the books at least once or twice, you’ll enjoy this game a lot. And if you’ve read them more than 4 times, you’ll really enjoy this game a lot. 🙂 HIGHLY recommended, and apparently it’s now available in game stores. It’s certainly made it to the Greater Toronto Area!

Rob Daviau from Hasbro Games recently responded to a post on Usenets inquiring about a Lord of the Rings RISK expansion pack. This is what he had to say:

“Sorry to disappoint you but it will NOT be a two-player expansion.
The new game will replace the game on shelf. It will have two more panels to the game to incorporate Gondor and Mordor. It will have a third deck of territory/adventure cards. It has a totally rewritten rulebook. It has new rules for “Alliance Play” and “Team Play”. It cleans up confusion on the cards. It clarifies rules in the game. It contains more pieces to account for the larger number of spaces.

The only thing I have not been able to do is figure out to get just
the pieces you need if you already own the first version. Unfortunately, you would need:
The new board
The new rulebook
The third card deck
All the pieces again (since they are bagged in one bag, we can’t just send the extras)

Then I realized that you need the first two card decks since the copy has been clarified and modified. Then I realized that the card backs will be blue, not red, so you need all three decks. (The blue is keeping with the ROTK style guide and to ensure that the correct decks are put in the game on the assembly line.)

I also realized that the vacuum-formed tray is different to account
for the larger number of pieces and cards.

So the only thing that carries over is the ring and the dice. Everything else is significantly new.

So it is a re-release. On shelf in December.”
