Check out this new poster of Thorin Oakenshield that is, apparently, coming to a bus shelter near you!

It reminds me of some of the posters that debuted with The Two Towers (probably the bluish one of Aragorn with Eowyn and Arwen), but I think the art department might have gone a touch far on the blue colour-cast of the setting with this one. What do you think? Leave a comment below!

Oh, and just click the image for an “embiggened” version. Continue reading “A new poster of Thorin Oakenshield coming to a bus shelter near you!”

gforum The Reading Room on the TORn messageboards has in the last couple of days kicked-off their second TORn Amateur Symposium (affectionately known as TAS).

The first TORn Amateur Symposium earlier this year published 13 essays on a variety of topics, and the second edition of TAS features nine more of which four have been published thus far, with the remainder to debut over the coming week or so.

These essays may be philosophic opinions, scientific theories, or analytical approaches to understanding or highlighting some facet of Tolkien’s writings and world. These pieces are written with the goal of amateur scholarship at their core — thus inspiring our Symposium title. Authors may choose to include citations or footnotes, but they are by no means required. Keeping in mind the dual spirit of enjoyment and inquiry that we believe in (as much as we value cheer and song), and which is of paramount important to both the TAS team and our authors, we fully encourage discussion of the essays presented.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy posting it. The TAS is open for discussion, and any comments, questions or thought you wish to share about this essay can be posted in this response to this thread.

Barliman's Chat This Saturday at 5pm EST, Hall of Fire resume Two Towers chapter chats with Frodo and Sam still with the Men of Gondor at Henneth Annun. Frodo’s own fate — and that of the Quest — remains undecided, yet he is summoned in the small hours of the morning by Faramir to discover that he must, himself, to decide the fate of another.

`The creature is wretched and hungry,’ said Frodo, `and unaware of his danger. And Gandalf, your Mithrandir, he would have bidden you not to slay him for that reason, and for others. He forbade the Elves to do so. I do not know clearly why, and of what I guess I cannot speak openly out here. But this creature is in some way bound up with my errand. Until you found us and took us, he was my guide.’

20131112_150753A couple days ago, I reported that LA’s upscale shopping center, The Grove, was suddenly transforming into Erebor. While we didn’t know what the purpose of this was at the time, many of us began to speculate that it was for the world premiere of The Desolation of Smaug, which is set to happen in Los Angeles on December 2, 2013. Continue reading “Follow-Up: The Grove’s Dwarven makeover is NOT for the premiere, but for something equally cool.”
