BREAKING NEWS: The Hobbit Stays In New Zealand

October 27, 2010 at 4:40 am by Earl  -

The night is darkest ere the dawn… and dawn has ever been the hope of Men!

After days of closed door talks between New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Warner Bros. executives, the verdict is out today:

Mr.John Key has only minutes ago announced at a press conference in the Beehive theaterette that Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films will indeed be filmed in New Zealand.

Media outlets have yet to post links to any videos… but stay tuned to TORn for updates as more of the good news makes its way on to the interweb.

For a sample of how news organizations around the world are reporting here are some links: CNN, TVNZ, Bloomberg and ABC to name just a few. Video of the announcement has been extremely slow to load. Peter Jackson’s team hasn’t released a statement yet but is expected to.

The party has already begun over at our message boards. Head over to join in the celebrations!

Oh what a beeeutiful thing! Fantastic that the movies stay here…appalling that New Zealand can be bullied by corporate lawyers and executives; we think we got shafted by an Australian union? – guess what, our PM and labour minister Brownlee have just grovelled to Warner Bros., who can now dictate changes to New Zealand’s labour laws, plus they get a cool $20 mil tax break bonus. What happens the next time NZ lands some big budget movie? The pattern has been set by this deal and we can expect more closed door negotiations, with more changes to NZ law

UPDATE – (A continuation from comment by me 5 days ago) … but wait, Bilbo lays his broom down and shades his eyes with both hands as he peers into the distance. A lonely figure, wearing a large funny pointed hat comes around the bend; sitting on the shoulders of Peter Jackson and Richard Taylor and surrounded by a large crowd is approaching carrying a sign over his head that says …”We are staying home!” Hooray!

    Dear Ones:

I am soooo happy that NZ is Middle Earth. Saner heads prevailed and now the fun and filming can begin.

    Life is so good.

I can’t imagine any place that matches the beauty and grandeur of NewZealand. The setting was perfect in the LOTR trilogy, and like wise it will be in The Hobbit.
Does anyone have any idea when the movie will come out.

  20. Frank Woods says:

Awesome, awesome news, but the lengths Key went to let the film stay here are quite bizarre. We basically let a multinational corporation dictate legislation to us – and legislation that had nothing whatsoever to do with the original union problems! Really quite worrying.

Ooooh, I’m sooo happy the filming is in wonderful, beautiful New Zealand. After all, isn’t that what Middle Earth looks like.

I can’t wait to see the film. Hurry and make it!!!
