Lindsay alerted us that Orlando Bloom helped man the phones at the Australian Bushfire Telethon Thursday night. So far, more than $75 million has been raised to help fire-ravaged communities rebuild their lives. Speaking on the program, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the outpouring of generosity from individuals and companies to those caught in the weekend’s deadly bushfires has made him feel proud to be an Australian. Other celebrities who appeared to support the telethon included politicians, musicians and sports stars. Jan writes: For those of you who live in Los Angeles, or in one of the local farthings thereof: Tolkien Forever, the Los Angeles smial of The Tolkien Society, will hold its fourth annual Reading Day on Saturday, March 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library, 16244 Nordhoff St., North Hills, Ca. Although Reading Day offically falls on March 25, the anniversary of the destruction of the Ring, the local smial will celebrate belatedly in order to accomodate the most participants. David writes: I write for a personal finance blog. I’m a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, and how applicable his works are to our everyday experiences. I try to find inspiration from unusual sources, and I recently did this by using “The Hobbit” as a source for 14 money lessons that can be applied to personal finance. J.R.R. Tolkien scholar Douglas A. Anderson will present “Annotating The Hobbit & Other Adventures” at Bradley University’s Neumiller Chapel in Bradley Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Peoria, Illinois. Anderson is the award-winning author and editor of The Annotated Hobbit, Tales Before Tolkien, Tales Before Narnia, Seekers of Dreams, and, with Verlyn Flieger, an expanded critical edition of Tolkien’s On Fairy-stories. He is also an editor of the academic journal Tolkien Studies.

Bradley adjunct and former Illinois Central College English professor Mike Foster will be the moderator of the free lecture. Foster has been the North American representative of the Tolkien Society since 1995. From 1974 until his retirement in 2005, he taught a literature course on Tolkien and another on fantasy literature at Illinois Central College. In 2006 and 2008, he taught an upper-division version of that class at Bradley University.
