This week’s LOTR movie news is kinda sparse, so I thought I’d add in some Tolkien stuff. I tried to concentrate on mostly on things related to LOTR, with a smattering of some personal (but public) info on Tolkien & family. Continue reading “Tolkien Flashback – June 14th-June 20th”

The Review Journal caught up with actor Viggo Mortensen at CineVegas and got this juicy quote about his interest in ‘The Hobbit’ films:
Mortensen also said he would like to replay the “Lord of the Rings” part of Aragorn in future “Hobbit” movies that have been announced by “Rings” director Peter Jackson. “I’d rather not have another actor play the part I started out playing for Peter Jackson. And I had a lot of friends from that experience,” he said.

Thanks to Board Member Elven for sending along this ‘News in Brief’ from the TimesOnline.co.uk:
In our report of the litigation between the Tolkien family and New Line Cinema, producers of The Lord of the Rings (May 25), we did not make it clear that Christopher Tolkien is suing as a trustee of the Tolkien Trust, a registered charity, and the JRR Tolkien 1967 Discretionary Settlement. It was another member of the family who referred to the action as “one last crusade”, not Mr Tolkien, and the hearing on June 6 was to fix a date for the eventual trial, not actually to halt Hollywood plans to film The Hobbit. We apologise to the trustees and Mr Tolkien for these errors.

James McAvoy is a popular interviewee these days thanks to his upcoming movie WANTED (Universal Studios). And, of course, the interviewers can’t resist asking him about the recent rumors that he’s a favored to play Bilbo in “The Hobbit.” In recent interviews with IESB.net and the BBC, McAvoy continued to deny the rumors. Plus, the ‘A-list’ actor has indicated that he intends to take some time off from acting. From the BBC interview:
The 29-year-old was concerned the jobs were starting to rack up for years to come: “That was almost a possibility. “It was getting to the point where that was happening and I had to put an end to it.”
At the risk of starting yet another rumor: could he be keeping his options open for a certain role?

Now it’s time to return the favor. Next week I’ll be speaking with newly minted “Hobbit” director Guillermo Del Toro, and I want you to give me some good questions that I can bring with me. No fair repeating a question he answered in our last chat or in his recent Q&A – we want news. So fire away, Tolkien fans. If you leave a name, I’ll tell him it came from you, and we’ll post video of his response online.

Entertainment Weekly has come out with a list of ‘The 100 New Movie Classics,’ and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, as a whole, has ranked No. 2. EW.com defines a ‘new movie classic’ as ‘films released in the past 25 years stand with the all-time greats.’ Here’s what they have to say about LOTR:
Peter Jackson did the impossible. He filmed an unfilmable novel, he conjured a dark, ravishing vision all his own without desecrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s, he made a nine-hour trilogy that truly lives and breathes like one movie, he got a riveting performance out of a slithery CG cave dweller with a split personality — and, what’s more, he made fantasy a box office monster.
