Edited by Adam Lam and Nataliya Oryschchuk (University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ), the book covers a wide range of topics about New Zealand’s connections with LotR.

Back Stage and The Hollywood Reporter continued their Evening With series of screenings and cast-and-crew discussions last week with Eastern Promises and Lars and the Real Girl. On Dec. 6, Viggo Mortensen sat down with Back Stage National Film & TV Editor Jenelle Riley for a Q&A following the screening of Eastern Promises at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, Calif. David Cronenberg’s film, set in London, tells the story of a Russian man (Mortensen) caught in a moral quandary between honoring his loyalty to his organized-crime family and his desire to help an innocent woman (Naomi Watts). Once in the grip of evening, the bog takes on a more sinister personality. And you understand what JRR Tolkien meant when he wrote: “The trees do not like strangers. They watch you. They are usually content merely to watch you, as long as daylight lasts.” He was writing, in Book One of The Lord of the Rings, about the mysterious Old Forest, haunt of the ageless Tom Bombadil. The Academy Award-winning producer behind the “Lord of the Rings” franchise has sued the films’ distributor, New Line Cinema, to force it to disclose its accounting for the multibillion-dollar epic.
The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles by octogenarian producer Saul Zaentz, was at least the second involving profits from the trilogy against New Line, which is accused in both suits of hiding profits. [Read More]
