The Unexpected Booklet project continues with the release of a fan booklet for the Extended Edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
TheHutt, editor of the Russian Tolkien site Henneth-Annun.ru, is the brains behind this project — a custom-designed, non-commercial booklet for each of the special editions of the Hobbit, that is consistent with the style established for The Lord of the Rings. In our latest Library piece, TORn reader and Tolkien Italian Network member Gabriele Marconi explores how a 2 minute video doesn’t pay full tribute to a fans love of Tolkien.
Gabriele told TORn, “The point is that a 2-minute time video could not contain nor the smallest part of the reasons why Tolkien is so strongly related to Italy and the Alps, the mountains we know so well (even if Tolkien went through them only from the Swiss side).
That is also why Italy is Middle-Earth, or at least a part of it, “Gondor“, as the very one John Ronald used to say. So I choosed to speak about the famous postcards of Der Berggeist and used them as a spark to tell more about the relations between Tolkien, Switzerland and Italy. Not only the postcards: every opened issue has been deepened in the shape of Q&A”
The article is translated from Italian to English by Greta Bertani.

It’s been a long journey since our very first TORn staff frame-by-frame trailer analysis — all the way back in 2001 when The Fellowship of the Ring was about to debut on the silver screen. Now it’s the very last one — the frame-by-frame for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
It’s been a lot of fun for us all, and we hope you’ve enjoyed the reading as much as we’ve enjoyed the analysing and speculating.
So without further ado except for the compulsory movie spoiler warning… Continue reading “TORn’s final frame-by-frame analysis: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies main trailer”

Going to the World Premiere of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies? Planning to camp out to secure a good spot at the red carpet? Fancy meeting with some fellow fans beforehand?
TORn can help you with that last one! We’re holding a ‘pub moot’ in London on Sunday 30th November, the night before the World Premiere. We’ll be gathering with fellow fans at Waxy O’Connor’s, near Leicester Square. The good folks at Waxy’s are reserving the ‘Cottage Bar’ as a private space for us – our own cosy hobbit hole complete with fireplace! We’ll be there from 6pm to closing.
No need to buy tickets for this event – just show up on the night! Waxy’s have an excellent menu, so you can buy dinner there – and of course their well-stocked bar will be open. This is a simple event – basically just show up to the pub, buy yourself a pint and chat with fellow fans!
We will have a couple of prizes for the best costumes, so you are warmly encouraged to show up in Middle-earth finery!
And you never know who may show up to a TORn party… Hope to see you there – The Cottage Bar at Waxy O’Connor’s, 14-16 Rupert Street, 6pm, Sunday 30th November.
[Please note: because of pub licensing laws, you must be 18 or over to attend this event. Sorry!]
