File this under ‘we really don’t want to toot our own horn, but a lot of people are emailing about it.’ Entertainment Weekly has named TheOneRing.net among the top fansites in their yearly ‘Best and Worst of 2007’ edition, on newsstands now. TheOneRing.net is deeply and humbly honored to be among those listed. We know, as I’m sure you do, that the success of TheOneRing.net is built on the passion and persistence of the entirety of Tolkien fandom. We owe everything that we’ve done, are doing, and will do to the genius of J.R.R. Tolkien and his devoted readers. So thank you (yes, you reading this!) for your support through the years, and we hope that you will continue along this journey with us as we move into a new ‘age.’ [Top 20 Fansites] [TORn’s Listing]

The Tolkien community is in hysterics today as we finally get the ‘official’ announcement concerning ‘The Hobbit.’ (Full Release) Now what? What can we expect? Well, first off, join the Tolkien community discussion in our forums and in Barlimans (IRC Chat). Then, strap on those seatbelts as we gear up for a wild ride! Director speculation, casting speculation, and don’t forget the infamous SPY REPORTS! Woo! We can’t wait! [Forums] [Java IRC Chat] [Digg It!] [Official Hobbit Blog] [Official Community Site]
And don’t forget to check out the TORn presentation on ‘Making the Hobbit Happen’ from DragonCon 2007. In the presentation TORn staffers reveal how we believe the films will play out – including casting, locations and more! [Hobbit Presentation]
After the ‘Great TORn Crash’ of a few weeks ago, many of the TORn staff were extremely worried about the possibility of having lost 18,000+ images and photos that comprise our Scrapbook section. After all, this area contains nearly 10 years of Tolkien fandom history represented in visual form. (Just think of all those fan events and Ringer submitted photos!!!) Thankfully, through the hard work of Arathorn and Corvar, the Scrapbook was completely recovered and is now revitalized in our brand new design. When you are bored at work today, take a moment to browse Tolkien history. [TORn’s Scrapbook]

Leandro writes: Elfenomeno.com (the Spanish member of TheOneRing.net Community), in its eighth anniversary, is proud to announce the Spanish version of the Map of Middle-Earth with Google Maps technology. Using the Google Maps API, the map of Middle-Earth drawn by Christopher Tolkien and the power of the “Fenopaedia” (Elfenomeno online encyclopedia), now you can travel from Hobbiton to Mordor, from Rivendel to Erebor, with a simple click of your mouse. Take a look and…Happy Birthday, Elfenomeno!
Henry Gee, the author of The Science of Middle-earth (which began life here on Green Books) has taken over the editor’s chair at Mallorn, the Journal of the Tolkien Society. Mallorn is usually published annually and takes reviews, fiction, criticism and artwork of interest to Tolkien aficionadoes. But Henry wants to ramp up the journal’s visibility, with a new design, more frequent publication and a change of focus. “Tom Shippey wrote that Tolkien was the Author of the (20th) Century”, says Henry. “But that was then, and Mallorn will be there to chart Tolkien’s evolving influence into the 21st”. He can be reached at mallorn@tolkiensociety.org
