Ringer Owain alerted us to a great deal at the Warner Bros. Shop site: they’re now offering the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition at 40% off the regular price. The deluxe 15-disc set includes 9 special features DVDs with over 26 hours of behind-the-moviemaking material including the rare Costa Botes documentaries. The sale price of $65.85 compared to the original price of $119.98 is a great deal. If you don’t own the extended edition blu-ray set yet, this would be a great time to buy, or throw out a few hints for your holiday wish list!

As Pippin would say, ‘What is going on?!’  On Thursday we reported that Warner Bros. had stated, in a press release, that there would be an extended edition Blu-ray and DVD for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey later in 2013.  Now, Warner Bros. have issued another official statement:

‘In the recently distributed calendar included in the Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary press kit, there was an erroneous mention of an Extended Edition release for The Hobbit film. This product has not been confirmed yet and we apologize for any confusion.’

So it’s officially UNconfirmed.  But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.  It’s just not confirmed as happening. Yet.  Watch this space…

Thanks to Ringer Oleander Took for spotting this in the Warner Bros. press release today regarding their 90th anniversary slate of offerings:

“And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well.”

Great news for Peter Jackson, Tolkien and movie fans everywhere! Join us in the speculation about which scenes will be in the theatrical release and which we’ll have to wait for the extended edition to see. Hobbit Discussion board, Barliman’s Chat, facebook, TwitterRead More…

Tourism New Zealand chief executive officer Kevin BowlerThe DVD package of Peter Jackson’s first Hobbit film An Unexpected Journey will be released mid-2013, according to Tourism New Zealand boss Kevin Bowler. Speaking today in Queenstown, he revealed it will also contain a New Zealand tourism feature directed by Jackson himself.

No word in the article on whether the DVD will be an “extended edition”. Cheers to Eldaria for the spot.
