Smaug Destroys Lake-town by John Howe.

A lot of folks have — in the wake of the trailers for The Desolation of Smaug — been pondering the question about the number of legs our favourite big, bad beastie might possess in the estimation of Peter Jackson (and his conceptual artists Alan Lee and John Howe).

Four? Two? It seems to be a bit unclear.

Here, Ringer Arandir examines the evidence (he does say that it’s not movie spoilery, but I think it is a little bit, so here’s your warning) and posits that we may be seeing a mid-stream change in Smaug’s conceptual design. Continue reading “Dragons vs wyverns: the question of Smaug”

The Dominion Post is reporting that a new Hobbit-themed sculpture is set to be unveiled at Wellington Airport on Tuesday. Naturally, they’re being all coy about what it’s going to be but apparently the existing Gollum-chasing-fish artwork will remain.

Desolation of Smaug soundtrack special edition Ringer Simon gives us a quick heads-up that Entertainment Weekly have 30-second samples of all 29 tunes from the special edition of the soundtrack for The Desolation of Smaug.

IMG_6615We’ve received many enquiries from readers wondering why the number of figures for Wave 2 of The Hobbit Trilogy line from The Bridge Direct is smaller than Wave 1.

HobbitDOSMirkwoodGaolKeyc2Last night Weta Workshop released two more prop replica items from The Hobbit Trilogy. The first is an item I have personally been looking forward to getting since the films were announced. The escape from Thranduil’s halls is one of the best parts of the book and this item plays a pivotal role in that escape. Fans can now own their own replica of The Mirkwood Gaol Key that Bilbo uses to rescue the Dwarves. As we all know the Dwarves were given seven rings of power and one of these rings went to Thoror who was the King of the Longbeards. Thanks to the craftsmen at Weta you can now bring home this ring of power. Collectors can snag The Mirkwood Gaol Key for $29.99 and Thror’s Ring of Power for $174.99
