Ataahua writes: New Zealand’s TV3 has just broadcast an interview with Peter Jackson ahead of tonight’s NZ premier of The Lovely Bones. When the discussion led to preparations for filming The Hobbit, he had this to say:

“We had slipped a copy of the script to Ian McKellen, who read it – because obviously we want Ian back again as Gandalf. Literally, we had somebody fly to London with the script in their hand baggage, they went to his house, gave him the script and then when he was finished with it he gave it back and that person took it to a shredding machine and shredded the script. Ian McKellen As GandalfIn an interview today with MTV, Peter Jackson revealed that three Lord of the Rings actors will be returning to reprise their roles in The Hobbit:

“Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in ‘The Hobbit,’ and we’re having Ian McKellen reprise,” explained the filmmaker, who is executive-producing the flick and writing the screenplay. “There’s a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there’s a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett.”

Sir Ian Mckellen and Kevin Spacey have been honoured for their contribution to the arts at a glitzy ceremony in London. The Lord of the Rings star walked away with a trophy for his hard work in showbusiness at the annual Variety Club Awards on Sunday.
