Michelf writes: The March 16 episode of Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report” featured an interview with Newbery Award-winning author Neil Gaiman. When asked for favorite authors when he was young, Gaiman promptly replied “Tolkien”. When he said his least favorite character was Tom Bombadil, Tolkien-geek Colbert launched into a stanza or two of Bombadil’s song. Continue reading “Neil Gaiman & Colbert Talk Tolkien and Bombadil”

To my delight, while flipping through channels on the TV tonight, I came across The Fellowship of the Ring playing on TNT. Sure enough, after checking their site, they’re doing another Lord of the Rings Marathon this weekend. The Two Towers will play tomorrow night (Saturday) at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Then, as is their custom, they will play all three movies on Sunday. The Fellowship of the Ring will start at 11:30 a.m. EST on Sunday, culminating with The Return of the King at 7:00 p.m. EST. If you live in the U.S. and have cable or satellite TV, be sure and take this opportunity to revisit Middle-earth. Read More

Last night I was watching ‘The Antiques Roadshow’, a long-running TV programme on the BBC in the UK. It involves members of the public bringing antiques and so on to show to experts, in order to get more information about them, and a valuation. Those of you in the UK can see the programme on the BBC’s iPlayer for the next five or six days, here. The interesting bit is about 35 minutes 45 seconds into the programme. Heidi from Bloomberg Television sends this in: Friday on the BLOOMBERG TELEVISION® program “Night Talk,” host Mike Schneider talks to Actor Viggo Mortensen about his latest film “Good.”

He talks about the success of The Lord of the Rings. “I think that anybody that was involved in that project, or any fan even, that says ‘I knew it was going to be huge box office success,’ I don’t think they’re being honest. I think its revisionist thinking. Because when we were shooting that movie…it just wasn’t a known thing, and it wasn’t really noticed that we were down there shooting this all that time. It wasn’t in the papers here. It was only when they showed 20 minutes of it at the Cannes film festival in 2001 that the journalist started talking.” Continue reading “TV Watch: Viggo Mortensen on ‘Night Talk’”
