Welcome to ‘Collecting the Precious’ a new column on TheOneRing.net about Tolkien collectibles.
I want to start this off with a little bit about myself. I’ve been collecting virtually all my life from sports cards to many of the high end items we see today. My collecting interest include many things like Lord Of The Rings, Marvel, Star Wars, GI Joe, He-Man, and more. All of which I talk about on a blog that I run called The Pulse. Tolkien’s work first came into my life first when I was in high school and saw a few friends reading The Lord Of The Rings. However, my own fandom while sparked wouldn’t kick in just yet.

HBO is airing a fantasy series in two weeks staring LOTR alumn Sean Bean. Just as in 2000, when New Line Cinema put high-quality fantasy in the cinema, viewed then as an expensive risk, the subscription channel is adapting a fantasy novel, George R.R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones,” for television. Bean, Boromir in Tolkien’s “Fellowship of the Ring,” is front and center here as the series’ most recognizable face playing Eddard Stark, one of the powerful players in a land full of political intrigue. Sunday night HBO started the two-week countdown before the shows airs each Sunday for 10 weeks. You can watch a 14-minute preview now but younger and sensitive viewers should be warned, there are graphic depictions of dead bodies, a beheading and the stuff of nightmares if you follow this link. (TORn recently ran a story comparing the LOTR films and the television series.)

If you fell for our April Fool’s yesterday, don’t feel too bad. We included a long standing rumor of Saoirse Ronan as Itaril to help convince you the release was ‘real.’ As we all know, Saoirse has been talking about her possible role as Itaril the elf for a few months. The latest piece of evidence that she is in fact already cast comes from the latest issue of Total Film magazine. In the ‘Buzz’ section, Total Film interviews Saoirse Ronan and asks…
You’re just about to start shooting The Hobbit – how long have you known that you might be in it?
When I did The lovely Bones, they said, “We want you to be in The Hobbit.” I love the book. It’d be so cool to go back to New Zealand Again.
The question is pretty clear she is cast and she doesn’t refute it in the answer. Just another piece of evidence that we will see Saoirse in The Hobbit. But will she be the created role of Itaril? Another role? We won’t know until the real official press release. Thanks to Ringer TheArcher777 for sending in a scan of the interview for your viewing pleasure. Share your thoughts and opinion in our comments, forum and on facebook! [Scan of Interview] [Total Film]
Thorin and company set off. Destination: The Lonely Mountain. Literally shoved out the door by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo somewhat reluctantly joins them, unaware how doing so will radically change his future — and that of Middle-Earth.
Seeking shelter one rainy night, they blunder into the camp of three trolls. Even worse, the trolls are hungry! Gandalf saves the day in the nick of time, and the Company discover the trolls’ hoard holds some interesting items.
Join us tomorrow Join us tomorrow on Saturday April 2 at 6pm EDT in #thehalloffire on our IRC server (irc.theonering.net) where we’ll delve into the second chapter of the Hobbit “Roast Mutton” and exploring the terms of Bilbo’s “burglary” contract, how does Bilbo fares when faced with the first real danger of the quest, the nature of trolls and the items the Company find in the trolls’ hoard.
