My all-time favorite scene in the entire trilogy is from this movie. It is the scene where prince Faramir goes out to his death at the wishes of his father against the overrun city of Osgiliath, where Pippin sings his solo while they ride into battle in slow motion… I’m getting chills just thinkih about that cinematic masterpiece!

  2. AerynSun says:

In the book, my favorite scene takes place while Sam and Frodo are in Mordor…Sam looks up at the sky, the darkness passes for one instant, and he sees a star. “The beauty of it smote his heart, . . . and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.” Beautiful and hopeful.

In the movie, while this may be a cliche, I still get chills when Sam picks up Frodo, saying “I can’t carry it for you… but I can carry you!”

My favorite scene had to be when Aragorn was crowned king…really beautiful and moving.

  4. Katie Noble says:

This is a difficult question! Just about all the scenes are truly magnificent.

But if I had to choose one, I would say my favorite would be the very end where Sam says, “Well, I’m back.” It’s straight from the book and I remember, opening day of Return of the King, I *wanted* to hear that line. For me, the story would not be over if he hadn’t said that. There and back again. It’s not The Lord of the Rings without that.

  5. My favorite scene is near the end, after the Ring has been destroyed in Mount Doom. Sam and Frodo are rescued by the eagles. It is a visually stunning scene and also signifies the end of the journey to destroy the ring.

My favorite scene is when the riders of Rohan crest a hill and see the masses or Mordor assembled before the white city. What does the horse king do? He grits his teeth and shows utter resolve.

I went to the first and second movies at wolf trap, and it was so worth the money and the trip! a wonderful way to relive my favorite movies! My favorite scene (so hard to narrow down to one) is probably when aragorn first sees arwen at his coronation– powerful emotions are beautifully displayed there, puts a lump in my throat every time! teri fahsl

my favorite scene is probably when aragorn first sees arwen at his coronation– true love and great relief, powerful emotions beautifully portrayed… brings tears to my eyes, every time I see it. Tfahsl

  9. Pattie says:

When Aragorn says “you bow to noone” and the hobbits are honored by all. I love that.

The death of Theoden. Makes me cry every time. I’m tearing up now just thinking about it.

  11. Suivanova says:

It is very difficult to choose a particular scene, since this movie was really magnificent. One of my favorites is almost at the end, when the Frodo and Sam are about to be swallow by the lava. Two little figures in an ocean of fire.

Elrond presenting Anduril to Aragorn… at first I was disappointed that they reworked this from the books. Then it hit me how well it tied in with how Jackson was depicting Elrond.

  13. Amelia says:

When Gandalf and Pippin are talking during the battle at Minas Tirith, and Gandalf talks about life after death. It sounds so lovely and peaceful! I love his words of wisdom, it was a great repreive from the action scene.

  14. Amelia says:

When Gandalf tells Pippin about life after death during the battle at Minas Tirith, it sounds so nice and peaceful. It was a great reprieve from the battle scene. I always appreciate Ian McKellan’s portrayal of Gandalf, especially in this scene.

  15. Bluepilgrim says:

I’m singing in this. AHHHHHHHH AWSGEEELLEEEEAAAAAATH!!!!! It’s the best.

  16. Bluepilgrim says:

eh my post didn’t seem to work….so I’ll try again – I’m not trying to cheat. OK favorite scene, I hate to admit this because it wasn’t really in the books: The lighting of the beacons!!!! I raise a lighter or a cell phone every time and it’s catching on at DC area viewings, I tell ya! My favorite musical moment is the very opening English Horn (or oboe?) solo. And I know I mentioned it seven times but I’m SINGING in the choir of the Wolf Trap performances. AAAAANDOOOOREEEELLLLL!!! It’s sooooo good. Love the crunchy chords and epic swells. I want to know what everyone thinks. Of course, the DC Ringers: Fellowship of the Beltway will be representing in the audience!

  17. LegolasGreenleaf says:

When, near despair on the plains of Gorgoroth, Sam rests with Frodo and tells him to look up at the shining star that has penetrated even the foul airs of Mordor, and tells him “Mr Frodo, look. There is light and beauty up there that no shadow can touch.”

  18. Eric Males says:

Elrond presenting the mended sword, Anduril, to Aragorn — a real shift for Elrond to put his trust in man, again — and time for Aragorn to truly return.

  19. Barb says:

When Legolas runs up the oliphaunt, killing foes right and left, and upon jumping back to the ground Gimli states, “That only counts as one!”

  20. Avicularia says:

Really hard to choose, but I like the scene where the beacons are lit. I love how they put together the spectacular scenery of New Zealand and LOTR’s awesome music.

  21. Justxlaugh says:

Oh that is so hard to pick just one! One of my absolute favorites is the scene where Pippin runs out to find Merry after the big battle. Merry: Are you going to leave me? Pippin: No Merry, I’m going to look after you. Ahh love them!!!

  22. When Elrond bring Aragorn the reforged Anduril, Aragorn’s expression of knowing where he must go. This really reinforces the film as a whole as it is truly the Return of the King

  23. Zak H says:

My favourite scene is definitely when the ring makes its final descent into mount doom, and then Frodo and Sam get whisked away. It is the most satisfying moment to bring about the conclusion to one of the greatest films I have ever seen. =)
