Ringer Spy Gorel sends along his tale from this weekends ‘Mythcon’. Check it out, and look for more news to come!

I got back from Mythcon a little while ago and wanted to drop you a quick story about Phlipa Boyens which others might enjoy. She sat in the audience during the panel discussion on the movies (after her interview). I was sitting behind her, and it was interesting to watch her shake her head or nod as people made various comments. I got out my Letters with the intent of quoting one of them. I was surprised to see her pull out her own dog-eared copy, raise her hand, and cite exactly what I had intended to:

“Final query: can a tale not conceived dramatically but (for lack of a more precise term) epically, be dramatized – unless the dramatizer is given or takes liberties, as an independent person?” – Letter 195

After the panel I told her what had happened and asked her to sign my copy of the Letters. She politely declined, saying she didn’t like to sign Tolkien’s work. Then she looked around in her purse and found a pad of paper with a LOTR logo, and gave me a nice autograph. She was a gracious person whose respect for Tolkien was evident.

Amazon are now making the first wave of Toy Biz action figures available to order in advance on their site. They also give the day for release as September 25th. [More]

Thanks to Mr Limpet for the tip.

“At this year Siggraph 2001, WETA Digital will showcase some of the work they are doing on the “Lord of the Rings” movies at the Side Effects Software (http://www.sidefx.com) booth, during their special Houdini meeting. To present the visual effects shots, Michael Perry, VFX animator at WETA Digital, will be there, and he will comment on the role Houdini software had in the post-production of LotR. [More]

From TORN Staffer Amyd

I haven’t noticed if you already posted this info about the event, but if you haven’t already, perhaps you can help spread the word to the more VFX-oriented TORN fans, maybe one of them will wanna send a review back.

The event will be held on Sunday, August 12, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Westin-Bonaventure Hotel’s San Jose Room. Besides the WETA presentation, there will be other companies demonstrating their most recent work, a reception afterwards, plus a sneak preview of the new Houdini 5 software. Unfortunately, there are no more open seats, due to the overwhelming demand, but if one of the torn fans happens to be going there, maybe he or she can send a report back to us.

Ringer Spy Mark sends alond this great *new* pic of Hugo Weaving as Elrond! Check it out!

From Richard:

UK magazine ‘Total DVD’ has been including a movie trailer disc for the last couple of months, which prompted me to ask whether they were attempting to get the FOTR trailer any time soon. Whilst their response wasn’t conclusive, they did indicate that they are seeking to obtain permission for several blockbusters (including FOTR) and they were keeping ‘mum’ about this month’s disc!

All UK ringers keep an eye out on your shelves this month to see if New Line gave them the go-ahead.
