Middle-earth March Madness 2012 – Round 3!

March 27, 2012 at 6:51 am by newsfrombree  -

We’ve reached the Elite Eight in our inaugural Middle-earth March Madness tournament! The match-ups in the second round proved to be quite historic, but none more than the Rankin/Bass Division. The top seed (1)Gandalf, narrowly won by a single vote. Yes, one vote out of 19,405 is all that defeated the great (4)Feanor! Proving once again that even the smallest of things can make a difference. In the other match-up, (6)Smaug lost to (2)Galadriel by only 100 votes in a competition that saw 20,616 total votes! The rest of the divisions were competitive, but did come down to less than 100 votes. (see all results here) Ultimately we’ve ended up with the number 1 and number 2 seeded competitors facing off in the Elite Eight!

(1)Gandalf will take on (2)Galadriel in a battle of characters that will be returning to the screen in the upcoming ‘Hobbit‘ films! In the Ralph Bakshi Division, (1)Bilbo Baggins will test his muster against a crowd-favorite (2)Aragorn. In the Tolkien Family Division, heavily favored heart-throb (1)Legolas will face off against the hardened savior of Middle-earth (2)Frodo Baggins. The Peter Jackson Division’s final competition comes served with a bit of irony. Peter’s division is the only one to have a competitor that was not represented on-screen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The match-up finds the top-seeded (1)Glorfindel versus a heavy crowd favorite (2)Samwise Gamgee.

Follow after the break to place your vote and see the latest version of the bracket. (download) Voting will remain open until March 30th at Noon ET. You may vote as often as you like, so please share with your friends and family.

Sam was a Hobbit too. He tried to stop Frodo when Frodo surrenedered to the ring. Frodo almost destroyed the Middle Earth exactly at the time when Legolas, Aragorn and many others were putting their lives on the line to divert the attention of the enemy FROM Frodo. He almost killed them all. If not for Gollum…but you know the story, I suppose.
Me thinks that Legolas and Aragorn, Sam instead of Frodo, Gimli would be enough to achieve the task. Would be faster and with the less drama.

There was a lot of doom in them cracks.

  3. Huffaroma says:

but he did get the ring there

  4. MaidenOfTheNoldor says:

ACTUALLY in the BOOK which is the authoritative source, Frodo never sent Sam away.  They went through Shelob’s lair together.  When Sam took the ring in the BOOK he almost succumbed to it within like an hour of picking it up, while Frodo had carried it literally for years before it finally overcame him.  Also in the book, Frodo rescues Sam numerous times.  Sam is a great hero, and Frodo couldn’t have done it without him, (or without many other characters) but in the end it was Frodo who made the greatest sacrifice.

  5. Praeriedikter says:

OK, this is not fair and I want to file a protest.  I do not understand how some people can vote as many times as they like but others are not allowed this same opportunity.  it is especially appalling that this has been pointed out to your organization and you have not addressed it.  I am calling for a moratorium of the voting procedure till you can assure that ALL votes are counted equally.  If you tell me that I can vote as many times as I want to then you need to assure that I have that opportunity.  No matter who wins at this point, it will be a hollow victory due to the corrupted method of tabulating votes.

    DO SOMETHING, PLEASE, TORN!!

  6. frodolover says:

excuse me, but without Frodo, Sauron would never had failed! Frodo brought light to the world again, don’t ever speak about him that way!

  7. Eelhunter says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but Frodo never sent Sam away in the book, that was made up for the movie.

  8. JGamgee says:

One, The Frodo sending Sam away thing was only in the movies.
Two, if Frodo had not trusted Gollum the Ring would not have been destroyed, so although that seemed stupid, it helped in the long run.
Yes, Sam is the real reason Middle Earth was saved.  “Frodo wouldn’t have gotten far without Sam.”  Still, Frodo paid a larger part than Legolas.  Don’t get me wrong, I  love Legolas, but it’s Frodo he’s up against… the little hobbit who truely did it better than anyone else could have(but only with Sam there of course).
    🙂

  9. Mari says:

Yeah. After Sam pulled him through and pushed him into it.

  10. Me says:

Excuse me. You aren’t protesting when Fordo fans are trying to insult Legolas, his fans and diminishing his input. As for Frodo brigning “light to the world again”, do not forget that it was “Let’s All Together Get Frodo To The Destination To Destroy The Ring” campaign. But Frodo should be considered as “da main and only hero?” I don’t see him this way. It’s helpful that the others weren’t at the moment when he almost destroyed Middle Earth. Except of Sam. He was there. Gollum was there too. While Legolas, Aragorn, Gimli, Gandalf, etc. were fighting the
battle that they knew they can’t win IF Frodo didn’t do the thing that
he was sent to do in a first place. Oops, he almost didn’t.

Frodo has his fans even if he had his flaws. Why Legolas who is flawless can’t have his? Can’t you, people, just vote for your favs without being so defensive to the others? Sheesh.

  11. Veeho says:

No one would forget that.  But it doesn’t minimize his achievement in the least!!  He is the ONLY one who could have gotten that far. Even Gandalf himself admits that the ring would corrupt him.

  12. Imanne says:

honestly, i think it became a poll for girls in love with orlando bloom.  Frodo was a much more amazing character.

  13. Imanne says:

wow.  round for is going to be extremely hard.

  14. Imanne says:

My apology. That was supposed to read round four.  round 4 is going to be extremely hard.  Seriously, Gandalf v Aragorn, Legolas v Samwise     That is almost impossible to vote for one because it means voting against the other.

  15. Me says:

What’s wrong with being in love with Orlando Bloom? LOL. And why don’t you think that people can love Legolas character? Legolas is a wonderful character. More interesting than Frodo. I see people here voted for Smaug and Feanor. Don’t see that anyone had problem with that. That’s sad. Because people prefer bad guys to the real heroes. What’s even more sad is that some people here keep whining that there are those who prefer to vote for the real heroes. Lame.

  16. Varda luvs Manwe says:

    i agree
