I suspect that few Tolkien fans out there realise that hidden within the Rings trilogy are references to Elvis, Edwin Starr and Johnny Cash. They are easy to miss but thanks to Charles Ross, the Canadian master of the one man movie genre their true place is restored within the epic which he manages to condense to an hour and ten minutes. We could have enjoyed this show five years ago had it not been for a legal wrangle with the movie makers which was only resolved last year just in time for the Edinburgh Festival where Ross was a sell out. Tolkien devotees will be making their way to Oxford’s Bodleian Library on World Book Day for a fleeting glimpse of some of the revered author’s original artworks.

The Bodleian is mounting a one-day only exhibition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original iconic artwork for The Hobbit, together with a manuscript of Hobbit doodles and a rare first edition of the book.

The free-of-charge display will take place in the Bodleian’s Divinity School on Thursday March 4 and will focus on Tolkien’s own manuscript of The Hobbit, which was illustrated throughout with monochrome drawings and maps. The UNM Hobbit Society is now accepting submissions for its second annual Fantasy & Science-Fiction Colloquium, “Intellectual Hooliganism,” set for Thursday, April 1, from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the UNM Honors Forum

To apply,submit a one-page proposal abstract to tolkien@unm.edu by March 10 at 5:00 p.m.  The Hobbit Society will consider submissions dealing with any fantasy and/or science fiction text* in a scholarly fashion.  All presentation formats are welcome, papers or audio-visual experiences that do not exceed 15 minutes in length.

Include contact information: name, phone number and email, as well as whether the presentation requires audio-visual equipment.  Presenters will be notified of acceptance on or before March 14.  *”Text” means in the broadest sense: films, comic books, television, video games and beyond are all open for scholarly analysis here. The Official Lord Of The Rings website has undergone a major redesign in anticipation of the upcoming Blu Ray release of the Theatrical Editions of the films, available April 6, 2010.

Subscribers of the Warner Bros. newsletter will have received an official Lord of the Rings newsletter less than an hour ago with an alert to the same.

Much of the site is still in the process of being updated, and while most of the links currently display “Coming soon”, some of the newer links are relevant to the Blu Ray release such as “Bly Ray & DVD” and “The Restoration Process”.

In an interview with the UK Daily Telegraph’s John Preston, actor Matthew Goode commented on some news that would be of great interest to those fans following developments on The Hobbit.  Preston writes:

“Now he’s a father, Goode doesn’t even like travelling that much. But just before we met, he’d auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film of The Hobbit. As he is the first to admit, he’s not an obvious choice – ‘Look at the size of me for Christ’s sake!’ If he got the part, he would, he says, find it almost impossible to refuse – despite the fact that it would involve him spending several months in New Zealand.”
