ITN reports:
Sir Ian McKellen has spoken of his joy at the new films in the Lord of the Rings series and at being in them.
“I’m just glad Gandalf’s back,” the legendary actor said.
Director Guillermo del Toro and executive producer Peter Jackson are bringing to life J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, in a two-part film. The 70-year-old said: “They’ve done a wonderful script, as far as I can tell, but what it will look like I’ve no idea. I can understand people being excited, and legitimately so. It is a real book, it was written by Tolkien, not just added on because they made a lot of money out of the first, it deserves to be made. It was a pity perhaps it wasn’t made before Lord of the Rings in the right sequence.”
The first part of The Hobbit is scheduled to be released in December 2011. ITN

Time Warner Inc, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp and billionaire Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries put up rival bids of $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion for studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, sources familiar with the matter, told Reuters on Monday.
Time Warner put in the highest bid of the three, the sources said. The company has been seen as most likely to walk away with MGM and its library of mostly classics, such as the James Bond franchise and a piece of the two “Hobbit” films to be produced by “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson. I suspect that few Tolkien fans out there realise that hidden within the Rings trilogy are references to Elvis, Edwin Starr and Johnny Cash. They are easy to miss but thanks to Charles Ross, the Canadian master of the one man movie genre their true place is restored within the epic which he manages to condense to an hour and ten minutes. We could have enjoyed this show five years ago had it not been for a legal wrangle with the movie makers which was only resolved last year just in time for the Edinburgh Festival where Ross was a sell out. Tolkien devotees will be making their way to Oxford’s Bodleian Library on World Book Day for a fleeting glimpse of some of the revered author’s original artworks.
The Bodleian is mounting a one-day only exhibition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original iconic artwork for The Hobbit, together with a manuscript of Hobbit doodles and a rare first edition of the book.
The free-of-charge display will take place in the Bodleian’s Divinity School on Thursday March 4 and will focus on Tolkien’s own manuscript of The Hobbit, which was illustrated throughout with monochrome drawings and maps. The drawings also appeared in the British first edition of the middle earth classic. Continue reading “Tolkien Paintings On Exhibit at Oxford’s Bodleian Library”
