On a new interview with Collider.com, Liv Tyler was asked if she might return for even a small part in The Hobbit. Considering many previous Lord Of The Rings characters were returning (including some not in the book) there has been speculation as to a potential appearance by Arwen.
Alas, that likely is not the case. “I haven’t heard from anybody” was her reply. Informed there would be additional casting yet to come for the film, she wasn’t optimistic on her chances. She did express fond wishes to join old friends and colleagues and said she would “love to go back to New Zealand”. The gift of foresight was lacking however as she was genuinely surprised to hear that filming started today.
For fans, Lord Of The Rings may be the last (and only) journey for Arwen Undomiel. However, Peter Jackson and company are known to tweek scripts and add new ideas as filming rolls on. So with more casting announcements coming down the pike, stay tuned to TORN for the latest updates throughout the production!

It’s the 21st of March down in New Zealand (or Middle-earth, depending on how geeky you are!), and reporting on the much-anticipated start of filming today, stuff.co.nz mentions something very interesting regarding casting.
There have been several casting announcements since Martin Freeman was confirmed as the lead in October last year. Yesterday Warner Bros. named Kiwi actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi for the roles of dwarf kings Thror and Thrain.
No wind of this casting announcement has reached the rest of the interweb yet. So only time can prove the veracity of this story. In the meantime, the rest of the article also includes some more interesting information. It goes on to state that:
Now, on the first day of filming, Jackson has revealed a sneak peek inside the new Bag End, the home of lead hobbit Bilbo Baggins. The photo of Jackson stepping through the front door of Baggins’ fictional home in The Shire was the only photograph issued by Warner Brothers yesterday, part of strict secrecy surrounding the film.

It is easy to see why astronomers called this object the Eye of Sauron, after the all-seeing symbol of evil in The Lord Of The Rings. It is in fact the centre of an active galaxy 43 million light years away from Earth. Scientists believe powerful X-rays generated by a super-massive black hole produced the bright blue ‘pupil’ of the eye. Images from the Chandra X-ray space telescope and the one-metre Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands were combined to create the stunning picture. The X-ray emissions from the centre of spiral galaxy NGC 4151 are thought to be caused by matter falling into the black hole. Black holes are regions where gravity is so strong nothing that gets too close can escape from it. More..

James Gurney, author of Dinotopia, the best-selling fantasy series, has just written in his blog about some sketches he did for the folks at Weta. Simon Haupt of Weta’s digital creature department, gave a gift to the team: copies of Gurney’s latest book: Color and Light. Mr. Gurney personally sketched each of the copies. After the jump, you can also find some very nice comments made about the Weta team.
James Gurney is the best-selling author of the Dinotopia series, which was described by the Los Angeles Daily News as “…in the tradition of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and J.R.R. Tolkien… a triumph of the imagination.” His blog, Gurney Journey, is one the five most visited art blogs in the world. His two art books, Imaginative Realism and Color and Light are among amazon’s best-sellers in the category. Mr. Gurney has also painted for the National Geographic Magazine.
