From Twilight Elf: I was really excited at seeing the 2 latest offerings from Houghton-Mifflin & quickly checked up with my local bookstore for their prices. Borders Singapore are expecting the stocks to arrive sometime in November 2002. The TTT Visual Companion is priced at $33.50. As for ‘The Making of LOTR’ by Brian Sibley, the soft version is priced at $35.50 & the hard cover version is at $52.50. Isn’t that just thrilling?
And from Enarei: “Hello to you from Bangkok, Thailand. No sign of the DVD here as of yet- though the VCD did come out on August 6th. I got one myself- a three-disc set in two cases (the cover is similar to what I have seen is on the DVD) which is in an elegant box with The Lord of the Rings in gold on the front and back, and is encircled by the elvish script on the ring (also in gold). It comes at B390, converting into something like $9.50, though some stores sell it cheaper (I got mine at $6.00). It’s only available in widescreen- fitting your TV screen, I mean (as far as I have found). Anyway, the movie quality is good, and I’m still getting over the fact that it’s the first time I’ve come across a VCD with a somewhat interactive menu. Included with the theatrical version of the movie is the official trailer and a slideshow with Enya’s ‘May It Be’ in the background.
“All in all, I like the VCD, but am looking forward to the DVD (which I was assured is ‘coming soon’- the release date is probably written on the posters, but since I can neither speak nor read Thai I wouldn’t know) as well as maybe the extended edition in November. Oh, and the VHS is also available, but I haven’t seen it yet. For fans in Thailand, if you buy one from Mangpong, you get a chance with each purchase in this lucky draw where you can get some cool LOTR stuff (posters, book discounts, etc.)”

Well, the night went well and for some the night is still going on. We were joined by 75 Ringer’s, Fan Club Members, members of TORN, Guests, and special guest, Dan Madsen, President of the Lord of the Rings Fan Club, and his lovely Wife-To-Be, Karen (you all might know here as DesertElf) were in attendance. The room was a warm and inviting, but a bit cozy for the crowd on hand.
Very nice goodies were give to all and even a few special presentations were made … including a beautiful United Cutlery version of Sting to Dan. Primula was awarded with a beautiful Framed copy of the Poem she wrote for Howard Shore, a Picture of her with Howard at Torn Oscars Party, and personal, Hand-written note to her from Mr. Shore. Both Rosie and Irascian were given wonderful awards for there dedicated service to the Club and the Boards … and Sauron’s Truss, Rosie, and myself flung Posters, Buttons, and Trading Game Cards (in Polish and Portuguese).
FUN WAS HAD BY ALL ….. More tomorrow with details from the DVD Screening, Picnic, and Concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
Signing off for now … you faithful … reporter… Baron
Ivan from Brazil says, “There´s a rumour about the extended DVD not being released down here, and the person from Brazil says that FOX(?) has no interest on the EXTENDED DVD, but actually WARNER is the official(Unfortunately)company dealing LOTR here, and has released the 2disc set here, so I don´t know what FOX has to do with this. Thanks a lot, please tell everybody that this has not been confirmed, and that our petition to have the extended version is about 1,200 signatures. Thanks
Juan, also from Brazil, is more annoyed about the whole thing. “I’ve read the report from someone in the news there… the REAL history is that the president from Warner Home Video here in Brazil says that New Line Cinema (FOX????) in the EUA was not interested in releasing the FOTR extended version DVD here, ’cause it “would not sell well”. Fact is there is a LOT of LOTR fans here, probably more than the guys from NL Cinema may expect.
BTW, we DO NOT LIVE IN FORESTS. We are not a bunch of naked cannibal indians. In fact, we are the greatest consumer market in South America, one of the greatest in the world (believe it or not!) [I know, we’re used to that attitude about NZ too – people thinking we lived in grass huts etc.]
In Finland (in Finnkino theatres) the TTT trailer will be in front of the new Austin Powers movie on 30th August, according to Mikko
In Australia: Canberra: Civic Video are (or were depending on stock) giving away a Royal Senangor Pewter medallion of Gandalf or Frodo with the purchase of the LOTR DVD. Thanks to Lolly for that. Baralier adds, “Just thought I might pass on to any Australians with multi-zone DVD players waiting to purchase the 4 disc collectors Edition in November, that while it is being advertised at dvdplanet.com.au for AUS$144.95, if they go through Amazon.co.uk, it is being sent out (at a discounted rate, including delivery) for 32.29 pounds, which converts to just under AUS$93.00. A saving of AUS$50.00
Meanwhile Platty says “Catch up with cinematographer Andrew Lesnie ACS, who won an Oscar for his work on Lord of the Rings. Having worked with Dr. George Miller, Clara Law and Bill Bennett over the years, hes bound to have a few interesting stories. 7.30pm, August 15 @ Treasury Theatre, 1 MacArthur St, East Melbourne. Tickets $12/$10. [More]
From Brazil we hear “I`m from Brasil and HAVE to report that de Extended DVD LOTR Set WILL NOT be released here!!!!!!!!!! FOX reported they don`t have interst in doing so.”
