TheHutt writes: During their TotalHD press conference at CES, Warner announced that New Line was working on the Lord of the Rings trilogy for both HD DVD and Blu-ray. While they did confirm that the titles were in the works, no details were given. A source close to the matter gave us a few details of the upcoming release, these include:
- Main feature will be a single DL disc on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. (no word if it will be a TotalHD disc (TotalDVD is a double-sided combination of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray)
- The movies will be the Theatrical Versions of each film.
- Both discs will be encoded using VC1
- These will be the first titles to use Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Audio
- Due to bandwidth constraints, as of now there will be no IME (“In Movie Experience”) like features.
Dominic Monaghan while promoting the next portion of this season of ABC’s hit series LOST, stopped to comment to iF on the state of affairs with THE HOBBIT movie (prequel to the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) which is locked in a battle between New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson. When asked point blank what he thought of the bitter war over the rights to the Tolkien story, the actor very wisely stated, “ This is a very iffy subject that you have to be careful with professionally as an actor because I’ve worked with New Line Cinema and I’ve worked with Pete Jackson and I have good relationships with both of them. My personal feeling as a fan is I think it’s a real shame that New Line and Pete Jackson don’t seem to be able to work out what’s going to happen with THE HOBBIT. I think fans of that franchise would like to see New Line Studios attached with Pete Jackson directing.” [More]
Dean Goodman’s latest article covering the Box Office race this weekend features a laughable misnomer when he states that the movie ‘Primeval’ stars Dominic Purcell and Orlando Bloom. The film of course stars Dominic Purcell and Orlando Jones. I can see how easy it is to mistake a black American actor with a white English one…silly me! Read the article here.

Ron writes: I just wanted to let you all know there will be a marathon screening of all three films at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, December 28th. It’s a great theater and it should be a lot of fun. I missed out on Trilogy Tuesday (remember that?) way back when, so I’m looking forward to this. Just wanted to give a heads-up to any fellow fans in the Chicago area. [musicboxtheatre.com]
