Sir Peter Jackson and his crew are on a Queenstown-based location scout of the South Island this week. Sir Peter’s assistant at Wingnut Films, Matt Dravitzki, yesterday said his boss was not available for interviews while he was in the South Island because the team were on a gruelling location scout. “Location scouting for The Hobbit is currently under way in both the North and South Islands.

“Locations will be chosen ahead of the commencement of principal photography in February.”

Mr Dravitzki said further details would be available once shooting started and it went without saying that New Zealand’s unique landscape would double for JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth. More..

Hobbiton Confidentiality Sign

File this under random Hobbit movie information of the day. If you ever wondered what the confidentiality sign looked like outside of the Hobbiton set in Matamata NZ, well, wonder no more! It is pretty obvious that the Hobbit production is taking confidentiality very seriously! Click on the image above to see a larger version.

Thanks to Ringer Spy Zsa Zsa for sending in this tip:

It says in Taupo Times (small local paper Taupo middle of north island) that Peter Jackson has been seen around Taupo looking at locations. Whakapapa was used in the Lord of the Rings, and it is about 1.5 hours away from Matamata. It will be interesting to see if he is going to use an actual area close to Taupo, maybe the Taupo Lake?? Rumour has it he has been staying at the -snip- in Taupo, and a fleet of helicopters were seen arriving at the hotel. Neither the local helicopter company or the -snip- would outline any details, and Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper said Jackson’s visit had slipped under his radar. He did say he hoped the director had picked up on the locations the region had to offer, particularly the western bays with Tongariro in the background..but then, thats not for me to judge I am not directing the film! (from Taupo Times 8th December )

So what location do you think is being scoped out in Taupo? Share your thoughts through the discuss link or comments! [Google Map of Taupo]

mrdither: I also recently had the pleasure of partaking in a Hobbiton Tour. My tour was taken the day after the big news – that the Hobbit would remain in NZ – and one could sense the excitement throughout the tour. I noticed TORN had already posted a spy report. However, the experience of being in Hobbiton was so invigorating that I felt inspired to post my thoughts.

My fellow readers even at partial completion Hobbiton is simply breathtaking. The party tree is in excellent health; Bag End sits majestically high above Hobbiton, about 75% complete because the front door and knob were missing; irrigation lines and sprinklers are in place; and flowers, gardens and tress are sprinkled throughout the grounds. It is spring in New Zealand, and by the time summer arrives all will be in bloom and the grass will fill in nicely. Despite all the delays, you could tell that the upkeep and care for preserving the integrity of Hobbiton had not been neglected. Continue reading “New Hobbiton Set Report”
