It’s nearly November – the month of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere is almost here. And news keeps coming out of Wellington of the preparation for the fun! This is the newest sculpture to pop up in the city – and these dwarves (and one hobbit!) are designed to be tough! Read all about it here.

Martin Bayton, creator of Jane and the Dragon, is spearheadng an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for Sandcastle building on Sunday, November 25 starting at 8am. This is not just a passing social event, funds are being raised for the Neonatal Trust of New Zealand. Wellingtonians, Kiwis, and everyone else visiting the city that weekend are invited to participate, and to encourage that, there are some benefits. WETA and Air New Zealand have come on board to offer some support and sponsorship, including a Pair of Tickets from any Air New Zealand gateway city to Wellington for the week in order to help build a Sandcastle and see all the Premiere activities. For New Zealanders, you simply need to join Adventure Wellington and then RSVP, everyone else would want to donate a minimum of $10NZD, which includes a ticket to the event and en entry to win the trip. You can find all the details at WETA supports world Record Attempt WETA is even making custom molds to help make sure the Sandcastles are built up to the required specs to meet the Guinness requirements.

It’s almost party time in Wellington, as they gear up for the world premeir of The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey on November 28. From the city of Wellington website: Wellington City Council will contribute $1.1 million to the premiere week activities and towards ensuring Wellington is again looking its best under the international spotlight. Celebrations and preparations for the World Premiere are already well underway, highlights include:
- A ‘countdown clock’ to be installed on the front of the Embassy Theatre. The clock will count down the minutes to the beginning of the premiere celebrations.
- Stunning artwork inspired by The Hobbit Trilogy to welcome visitors at Wellington International Airport and across the city.
- A Hobbit-inspired Artisan Festival in Waitangi Park showcasing the various craftspeople and talent involved in the making of The Hobbit Trilogy.
- Outdoor, free public screenings of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy leading up to the premiere night event.
Excitement is building in New Zealand’s capital as the date for the first Hobbit film premiere draws near. Today TORN and Red Carpet Tours announced their Premiere Party to the regular media, and it’s made Wellington’s Dominion Post news already. From Hollywood Reporter. com: Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is to be the 65th Royal Film Performance on Dec. 12 in the British capital. The movie will screen to the Queen or members of the Royal Family in aid of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, the charity set up to look after U.K. industry employees and their families who are suffering from hardship.
CTBF president Anne Bennett said: “We are thrilled to be able to host the U.K. premiere of this highly-anticipated first installment of “The Hobbit” trilogy.
