Fans had a lot of fun in 2014 reveling in Middle-earth while the filmmakers toiled away. This year we reached over 100 Million Hobbit fans across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the community here, so let’s look back at some of the most exciting Hobbit Fan moments of the year!
Say hello to the Cumber-bomb!
Photobomb of the decade? We think so. Benedict Cumberbatch leaps into the frame of a U2 photo at the Oscars. Cumbie trended throughout the night!
TheOneRing.net turns 15 with #TORN15
Four fans started a little website here fifteen years ago. What began as a Message Board and IRC channel quickly became a pillar of Middle-earth fandom and home to many wonderful Ringer efforts. Throughout the year we shared stories of scoops, photos from the scrapbook, and tales of community at conventions. Peter Jackson once said at the ROTK Oscar Party “Let’s not shut TheOneRing down just yet…”
We didn’t then and we don’t plan to now.

PJ & the fans rename the final Hobbit film
In April #PJ renamed The Hobbit: There and Back Again to “The Battle of the Five Armies’ and fans were wholly inspired by Peter Jackson’s efforts!
Live Tweeting LOTR Trilogy on TNT
In August cable network TNT aired the entire LOTR Trilogy across the United States and we started tweeting facts and stories scene-by-scene for the full 14 hours. It became a more amazing day as actors jumped in on the twitter conversation — Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Jed Brophy and others started dishing secrets from filming. For one full day, Tolkien fandom took over both TV and twitter.
The feels when Frodo first sees Bilbo in Rivendell, writing There And Back Again. "I'm not like you, Bilbo"
