As you know, over the next couple of weeks or so TORn is conducting a pledge drive to raise funds and keep our servers running. But, as you might know, we also have some very exciting auctions going on over at ebay.
We have some fabulous, exclusive pieces up for grabs – including some things which, usually, money can’t buy! Here’s just three that might tickle your fancy:
Book: The People’s Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien
This guide to J.R.R.Tolkien is an exploration of Tolkien’s world from the writers of the Tolkien fan website, TheOneRing.net. This volume includes new articles as well as familiar favourites from the website. The essays are grouped around themes such as defending fantasy literature from the accusation of triviality; why people become Tolkien “fans”; whether Tolkien’s notions of Good, Evil and Free Will are relevant to a changing world; the inspiration fans draw from his work; and the ideas from which Tolkien himself drew inspiration, both in his life and in his love of ancient literature and European myths. This volume also looks at the impact of the wildly popular cinematic version and answers the most common questions asked about Middle-earth.
Condition: Like New: A book that looks new but has been read. Cover has no visible wear, and the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. May be very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover. Very minimal wear and tear.
New Very Rare “Children of Hurin” signed by Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee
This is a very-hard-to-find first edition signed by both Alan Lee (illustrator) and Christopher Tolkien (editor) to a publisher’s book plate affixed to the half title page. It is estimated that only 900 of these signed bookplates were produced, with 500 being sent to Houghton Mifflin. These bookplates were inserted into standard hardbacks as a release-day promotion in New York City on April 17, 2007. This is one of those very rare books and includes the promotional Bookmark that came with this release edition.
Opportunities to add signed works like this of new Tolkien publications will rarely come again. This is a Collector’s treasure.
Demosthenes’ note: I own a copy of this edition — though not signed, alas. Not only is Lee’s cover art stunning, there are another six or eight full-colour plates spread within the pages of the novel itself, as well as greyscale pencil sketches for each chapter. It really is a beautifully presented book.
NIB Royal Selangor Pewter & Gold Frodo Lord Of The Rings Goblet
The One Ring forms the base of the pewter goblet – representing Frodo the Ring-bearer. The One Ring is plated in 24K gold and carries the famous inscription in Elvish”One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” Inspired by JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, this stunning work of art measures 7.5 in (18.5 cm) in height.
