Sir Ian McKellen On Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hobbit

June 1, 2011 at 10:23 am by Earl  -

Sir Ian McKellen has earlier today put up a new blog post titled “Congratulations, dear Watson” on his personal blog “Notes From Imladris” chronicling his journey filming The Hobbit.

Those following TORn will recall our coverage from last week of Martin Freeman letting slip the news that Benedict Cumberbatch has landed a role in the films.

McKellen’s post today confirms Freeman’s statement, and also goes a bit further with a little teaser of the potential role Cumberbatch has been cast in.

Now, what can he [Benedict Cumberbatch] be playing in The Hobbit?

Philippa Boyens showed me a snippet of his screen-test, played in close-up into the camera.  It was electrifying, vocally and facially.  Yes, what can he be playing?

So for now the question remains… what role has Cumberbatch been cast in? As always, our message boards are rife with speculation, and you’re welcome to join in.

  1. It seems to suggest that Cumberbatch will do Smaug. The close-up filming thing, and emphasis on voice and face is, at the least, suspicious.

But DOES Smaug actually HAVE to be a male character. I know Tolkien assumes he is, but is it really… necessary?

I think he would make a good eagle lord or whatever the head eagle is called

  3. Rosie says:

I think he should be Bard.  And I’m still hoping Leonard Nimoy voices Smaug.

  4. Aurens66 says:

He’ll be fantastic in anything, but I was hoping for a role that wasn’t a voice only so I can have an Action Figure.

  5. Tim Fontenot says:

I wonder has anyone suggested a full bodied Sauron?

  6. tamtam says:

Benedict has an amazing voice.  There’s not a better pick for Smaug.

I could see that working very well.  Benedict can be quite charming, but the cruelty/heartlessness he displays as Sherlock can be breathtaking.
