Rumors The Hobbit might be filmed in 3-D have been around for some time and dismissed often by Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson .  Even last fall, del Toro stated on the TORN message boards:

“As a co-writer and director of this film … let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now.

However, he did add this caveat:

If after “Avatar” the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I’ll let it be know here at TORN because that’s the proper way of doing things.

True to his word, del Toro has now added an update via the TORN forum:

I wouldn’t read much on it just yet, but now, after all this time, after AVATAR doing the Box Office it did, we have had enquires from above about The Hobbit being in 3-D. No impositions or heavy leaning. Just enquires. Just fulfilling my promise to let you all know if discussions ever started.  Cheers, GDT

So while there is no confirmation on filming in 3-D, there is certainly discussions under way.  Add your comments to the TORN forums here!

Thanks to Ringer GrgOffr for alerting us to the upcoming March 8th episode of CBS’s ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ The episode is titled “The Precious Fragmentation.”  The story has the crew finding a replica of the One Ring at a garage sale.  You can imagine what follows. Check your local listings! [Official Website]

The Official Lord Of The Rings website has undergone a major redesign in anticipation of the upcoming Blu Ray release of the Theatrical Editions of the films, available April 6, 2010.

Subscribers of the Warner Bros. newsletter will have received an official Lord of the Rings newsletter less than an hour ago with an alert to the same.

Much of the site is still in the process of being updated, and while most of the links currently display “Coming soon”, some of the newer links are relevant to the Blu Ray release such as “Bly Ray & DVD” and “The Restoration Process”.

Just when things seemed slow, we get a report on a possible casting rumor for Bard! The rumor comes from Ringer Enidan who suggests Clive Standen (Doctor Who, BBC Robinhood) is one of the names being considered for Bard in the upcoming Hobbit Films. Enidan writes:

I have heared that Clive Standen not Richard Armitage is on a list for Bard the bowma. They both appeared in BBC Robin Hood but Clive Standen who played Archer (Robin Hoods appropriately named brother) was an expert archer/swordsman and horseman. So it makes sense if you look him up on imdb you can see he is connected / linked to pirates of the Caribbean 4 so maybe he is in contention for the hobbit? I have not seen this list but i have a reliable source working in casting.

Take it for what is is, a rumor. What do you think of the possiblities? Is Clive a good choice for Bard? Discuss it in our forums and let your voice be heard! [Wikipedia Listing] [IMDB]

Tolkien Reading Day was set up to encourage people to get together and explore some of Tolkien’s stories at school, university, in reading groups, or as a family; the theme for 2010 is

“Tolkien’s Seafarers”

Reading Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to read together and share their thoughts about the story. As 2010 is the International Maritime Organization’s Year of the Seafarer the theme chosen gives people a chance to read and think about exploring the undercurrents in the Numenorean romance the “Tale of Aldarion and Erendis” from “Unfinished Tales”, the journeys and ships of the Teleri, the flight of the Noldor, and the voyages of Tuor and Earendil in “The Silmarillion”, or Bilbo’s poem about the latter in LotR. There are also the poems “The Happy Mariners” and at a pinch “Bombadil Goes Boating.
