Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham have been nominated for a Producers Guild of America Award. Peter was previously nominated in 2003 for ‘The Two Towers’, and eventually won in 2004 for ‘Return of the King’. He is up against: “Avatar”, “An Education”, “The Hurt Locker”, “Inglourious Basterds”, “Invictus”, “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire”, “Star Trek”, “Up” & “Up in the Air”.

Nvidia and Weta Digital have developed an advanced ray-tracing system that is capable of quickly and accurately processing billions of polygons. The engine, dubbed PantaRay, was designed to accelerate pre-computation of scene occlusion data and dynamic image-based lighting in James Cameron’s Avatar.

“The complexity of Avatar motivated us to think about rendering differently. We do our final beauty-pass renders with RenderMan, but to optimize artistic iterations on Avatar’s huge data sets, we moved the bulk of the calculation to a pre-computation step,” explained Sebastian Sylwan, Weta’s head of research and development.

Tom and the folks at dvdactive.com send along updated info on the LOTR Animated DVDs hitting the shelves in April: Warner Home Video has revealed details on DVD ($19.98) and Blu-ray ($29.99) releases of Lord of the Rings Animated which will arrive in stores from the 6th April. Extras will include a Forging Through The Darkness: The Ralph Bakshi Vision for The Lord of the Rings featurette, and a digital copy. More..
