Sir Ian McKellen, who is most notably known for his role as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto mag-neat-oh from X-Men, spoke with FSU theatre students Tuesday afternoon sharing his journey from live theatre to the silver screen. “it’s unbelievable. WETA LOGOWellington’s Weta Digital computer graphics workshop is launching a working group aimed at bringing advanced research together with movie production. The new group, Transfx, is headed by Sebastian Sylwan, who has joined Weta as head of research and development, Variety Magazine reported today.

Sylwan was most recently senior industry manager for film and television at United States software developer Autodesk, where he led work on stereoscopic 3-D. Weta is already working on an innovative 3-D movie, James Cameron’s Avatar, as well as Steven Spielberg’s Tintin. Transfx will be partly funded by the Government but mostly by Weta, Sylwan said. The influence the Welsh language had on books by JRR Tolkien is to form part of a major new festival in Powys to honour the author. The Festival in the Shire will celebrate themes inspired by Tolkien, whose novels included Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Fans of the writer, leading academics and illustrators are expected to attend the planned event in Machynlleth. It is being organised by local book dealer Mark Faith for next August. More..

September’s agreement was reported at over $100 million, meaning J.R.R. Tolkien earned a sizable income in the last year.
