John Garth’s book, Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth, has now been published by HarperCollins. It recounts Tolkien’s experiences in the First World War, describes the building of his mythology; and tells the full story of his inspirational group of friends, the TCBS. Drawing extensively on his unpublished personal papers from this period, it is the first substantially new biography of Tolkien since 1977. AN Wilson, in the London Evening Standard, says: “This is very much the best book about Tolkien that has yet been written….” Wilson’s review can be read here and the book is for sale here.

Becka sends in a photograph of her most amazing birthday cake! Check it out HERE.

Given the number of cakes we have seen lately, it seems there is no end to the creative talents of LOTR fans! I’m sensing a Hobbit Bake-off one of these days …

Becka writes: This is a picture of my 16th birthday cake. I have loved the Lord of the Rings since my dad told me to read it in the fourth grade. I finished the Hobbit within 3 weeks, and when he told me there was more, I was sold forever to the land of hobbits, elves, and wizards.

Sweet Cake!

Since it WAS my sweet sixteen I decided to make it special. On the top, the cake has places among Middle Earth, on the Middle has the One Ring scripture, and along the bottom has more places and countries of Middle Earth, such as the Bay of Belfas, and Rohan… which you can see there.

Thanks for your time!

Long live Frodo,

Becka
