LORDS OF THE TOP GROSSERS

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers has become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, having amassed international box-office takings over $910 million. The second instalment in Peter Jackson’s Tolkien trilogy, it recently overtook its predecessor, The Fellowship of the Ring, which is now seventh on the all-time list with $861 million in box office takings. The final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King, will be released on December 17th.

The four films ahead of The Two Towers are Titanic ($1.8 billion), Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ($976 million), Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace ($926 million) and Jurassic Park ($920 million).”

Ken writes: The sheep races in Shropshire England were held and one of the sheep, who incidentally didn’t win, was named Bilbo Baggins. Saw this on CNN Headline News this morning.

Zip writes: I came across this quote on NataliePortman.com discussing the reason for moving her latest movie “Cold Mountain” back until 2004. ‘The official reason will be that “the climate is not right” (an insider says) for a movie whose central character is a deserter. Unofficially, Harvey Weinstein has seen a rough cut of Return of the King (he is an Executive Producer) and says that it is “unstoppable” as a Best Picture winner.”

This is for fans in the Canberra area: the Centre Cinema is showing FOTR and TTT as part of its swansong before closing down. [More]

The Centre Cinema in Canberra is closing down, due to refurbishment of the building, however it will not re-open in the renovated building. As its swan-song the cinema owner is running a farewell festival of favourite films over the next couple of weeks. This cinema is some 36 years old, has a wonderful large screen and fantastic sound.

The following programme has been designed to give Center Cinema a big send-off. A full colour souvenir poster with the Festival programme is now available from the cinemas. (I have removed details of other films)

Friday 16 May at 7.30: THE LORD OF THE RINGS – THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (rated M). On the big Center screen, in response to many requests.

Friday 23 May at 7.30: THE LORD OF THE RINGS – THE TWO TOWERS (rated M)

All of the films in the Festival are 35mm, and are either new or believed to be in excellent condition.”

Thanks to Lolly for the news!
