Month: May 2002
We have been saving up to get a new server since before Fellowship hit the screens in December, and it has finally happened. A little over a week ago, Dell shipped us a brand spanking new PowerEdge 1650. Since then Arathorn and myself have been spending all of our free moments working to get the new server ready and in production.
Today between 2-3PM EST the new server went into production. I am fairly sure that most people will be able to feel a notable performance increase in the responsiveness of the new server.
Hardware Specs (old server):
Compaq Proliant 6500
4 x Pentium Pro 200MHz w/ 1024K cache.
2GB of memory
7 x 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI Drives
Compaq SMART2 RAID Controller (2 x 2 drive mirrors and 1 x 3 drive RAID5)
Hardware Specs (new server):
Dell PowerEdge 1650
2 x Pentium III 1.26GHz w/ 512K cache.
4GB of memory
3 x 18GB U160 SCSI Drives
Dell PERC3/Di RAID Controller (1 x 3 drive RAID5)
OS Information:
The old server ran Debian Potato with a 2.2.19 kernel.
The new server is running Debian Woody with a 2.4.18 kernel.
Additionally, in the transition we have switched from the use of Thttpd for serving images to the use of RedHat’s TUX Web Server.
Welcome to the new TheOneRing.net, running on its brand new Dell PowerEdge 1650 server! Over the next few days you might find some errors in the site, a side effect of the transition from our previous server to our new one. So bear with us in the meantime, and enjoy the benefits that our new server brings!
Update: If you are interested in the geeky specifics behind the new server follow the link [More]
For many months, TheOneRing.net has searched for a new server to replace the ailing one which has served us so well for so many years. Well, thanks to the support of many of the fans themselves, we have that new server and today we make the transition from old to new. What does this mean? Well, at roughly 13:00 EDT/19:00 CET, the site will cease to exist as we make the change and will do so for at least half an hour and most likely more. So next time you visit the site, hopefully you’ll be using our brand new server!
This weekend, join us in the Hall of Fire as we discuss the Two Towers chapter The Uruk-hai, an insight into how the minions of evil work and a closer look at the life of an Orc in the War of the Ring. [More]
Pippin lay in a dark and troubled dream: it seemed that he could hear his own small voice echoing in black tunnels, calling Frodo, Frodo! But instead of Frodo hundreds of hideous orc-faces grinned at him out of the shadows, hundreds of hideous arms grasped at him from every side. Where was Merry?
He woke.
Book Three, Chapter Three: The Uruk-hai
For Pippin and Merry, their situation seemed more akin to a nightmare than reality, waking to find themselves amongst the band of Uruk-hai who attacked the Fellowship, slew the man protecting them and captured them for a fate arguably worse than death. From their horrible position, the two hobbits begin to understand what these orcs are: Uruk-hai, creations of Saruman bred specifically to be a more perfect warrior. However, it becomes clear that all is not well between the Orcs of Barad-dur and the Orcs of Orthanc.
