Bofur

Official Description: While most of the Company of Thorin Oakensheild is related to the royal and noble line of Durin, Bofur, his brother Bombur and their cousin Bifur most definitely are … not. Born and bred in the West , descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free

TheOneRing.net Description: Bofur, his brother Bombur, and cousin Bifur are the only dwarves in Thorin’s company who are not Longbeard dwarves of the House of Durin; although their House is unkonwn, they descend from Dwarves ruled by Durin in Moria, otherwise known as Khazad-dûm. In Bag End, Bofur asks for mince pies and and cheese and also plays a clarinet. Bofur remains with Bombur to watch the ponies when the party moves up to a narrow ledge on the Lonely Mountain, though Bofur occasionally is pulled up on ropes to join the rest of the party. When Smaug leaves the mountain, they are pulled up on ropes and make it safely into the tunnel. Gloin reports that Bofur is still living with Dain in the Lonely Mountain at the time the Fellowship of the Ring is formed in 3018.

Analysis: Neither Bofur’s birth or death date is known. However, given the age difference of at least 50 years between Fili and Kili and the rest of the party, his birth year is likely before about 2809.
