Waiting in line Saturday morning for Panel H
Intro: One of our Ringer Spies, frenz, didn’t know quite what to expect when she received her ticket to Comic-Con 2012. Orcs and goblins and bears, oh my! Not to mention a line of over 7,000 people to get into Hall H (capacity of 6,500) for the WB panel, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Pacific time today. Here are some of her impressions:
So what happens when a new Tolkien fan finds herself at Comic-Con? A sensory overload? Certainly. Everything is big and loud and insane, and it’s caused an unstoppable grin, which is quite something since I’m not normally much for grinning incessantly. But at Comic-Con, you will be miserable if you can’t grin:

LEGO fans can finally get a look at some of ‘The Hobbit’ mini-figures. The figures will hit store shelves on December 1. Expect additional figures, as well as film-themed sets and some secret activities at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Warner Bros. has not confirmed ‘The Hobbit’ panel at Comic-Con, but perhaps the vagaries of Twitter have. Several independent tweeters who attended Ian McKellen’s benefit show last night in Wellington have said Lee Pace stated Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage would be at Comic-Con in July. We cannot confirm the reports, but we believe them and expect both key “Hobbit” actors to be in San Diego. We also volunteer to act as popular-culture coaches as the place will be mad for them.
And while WB has officially said it hasn’t officially said a ‘The Hobbit’ panel will be part of the three-hour block the studio has reserved on Saturday in the 6,500 seat Hall H, but it is widely believed ‘The Hobbit,’ will play a big part of it. The hall, the biggest the convention center has to offer, has required waiting in long lines at least the last three years and now even camping out for a space is not unheard of. Over 125,000 people attend the show each year. (Video of the fundraiser after the break) (more…)

Ian McKellen’s one-man show to raise funds for the benefit of Christchurch’s earthquake-damaged Isaac Theatre Royal is in Wellington this weekend for its final few shows. Here’s a snippet of video from the last night’s show at the Opera House that features cameos from cast members from The Hobbit, and the locals.
Thank-you to RichardArmitageNet for information on images and video.

For LEGO developer, Traveller’s Tales, it’s all about the journey with their first venture into “LEGOfying” an Academy Award Best Picture winner. Executive Producer Nick Ricks shared at E3 that the team has been working closely with LEGO and WingNut Studios/New Line to recreate The Lord of the Rings experience as authentically as possible. Some in-game sequences are not completely made of LEGO with cinematic sequences added.
“There’s so much fantastically framed cinematography and brilliant camerawork. We can’t improve on that, so we just need to take it and put it into the game,” Ricks explained.
The usual LEGO voices for characters have also been replaced with theatrical ones such as Orlando Bloom for Legolas, and to streamline the journey, the game world has been created around Tolkien’s original maps where characters can move from Hobbiton to Mordor without jumping in and out of chapters.

Billy Connolly returned to New Zealand today after a brief tour to promote the animated movie “Brave,” which was three years in the making. He was glad to be back to complete his role as Dain Ironfoot.
“I have a war to fight. Elves to kill. Orcs to maim,” he says.
And he has really enjoyed working with Peter Jackson, who obviously sets a high standard.
“He knows what he wants and he stays on the case until he gets it. It’s highly technical and we do a lot of takes. It’s not like normal movies where you just have to get your words right and avoid the furniture.”
But Billy isn’t sure how long he will be in New Zealand although he hasn’t done much sightseeing yet and revealed he has an invitation to “The Hobbit” wrap party on July 7th. So only a little while longer for Billy to be a dwarf warrior. Pickups are expected to take place after the official wrap, so some filming will go on after the July 7 party.

The film panels for Comic-Con’s 6,500 seat Hall H are beginning to shape up nicely, which helps TheOneRing know where its staff will be spending its time. Warner Bros. has booked a three hour slot on Saturday for the largest hall, and “The Hobbit” will likely be featured and be assured TheOneRing.net team will be there to fully report. Perhaps the Tolkien fans need to ready their sleeping bags. Rumors place significant “Hobbit” actors at the event but we have no confirmations at this time.
TheOneRing.net also has been invited by Comic-Con to present a “Hobbit” panel as we have done for several years in a row. We also expect to feature some cool bonus content from Weta Workshop and chat about our Gandalf / Fandalf effort. Exact times will be announced very soon, perhaps as soon as tomorrow so stay tuned.
