desolation-of-smaug If you’re a bit of a vinyl fan (confession: I am), you’ll find this news about The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug soundtrack quite exciting. Apparently it’s going to be released on good old-fashioned vinyl on December 3.

Personally, I’d love a 180-gram pressing, but presently no further details are available on that front. Amazon — which is already taking pre-orders on the vinyl release — indicates that it is one disc only, not a double LP. To my mind, that may indicate that the LP will be the standard release of the soundtrack, and not the Special Edition.

You may recall that the Special Edition CD for An Unexpected Journey featured two CD discs and a slip-out saddle-stitched booklet of lyrics and photos, plus Doug Adams’ liner notes, all encased in a fabulous gatefold digi-pack using gold foil lettering across the front. Really nice stuff and I can only imagine how good it would look (and feel!) scaled-up for a 12″ vinyl! So cross fingers, and hope we’ll get something like that — we’ll certainly let you know as soon as we hear (or see) more!
