1. Thorin and Gandalf’s chance meeting at the Prancing Pony.

     “On a time Thorin, returning west from a journey, stayed at Bree for the night.  There Gandalf was also.  He was on his way to the Shire, which he had not visited for some twenty years.  He was weary, and thought to rest there for a while.”

March 25, 3019 (S.R. 1419)

1. The Host is surrounded on the Slag-hills.

     “No choice was left them but to play their part to its end.  Therefore Aragorn now set the host in such array as could best be contrived; and they were drawn up on two great hills of blasted stone and earth that orcs had piled in years of labour…’

2. Downfall of Barad-dûr and the passing of Sauron.

     “Out from the beleaguered hills knights of Gondor, Riders of Rohan, Dúnedain of the North, close-serried companies, drove against their wavering foes, piercing the press with the thrust of bitter spears.  But Gandalf lifted up his arms and called once more in a clear voice.  ‘Stand, Men of the West!  Stand and wait!  This is the hour of doom.’”

3. Frodo and Samwise reach the Sammath Naur.

     “The path climbed on.  Soon it bent again and with a last eastward course passed in a cutting along the face of the cone and came to the dark door in the Mountain’s side, the door of the Sammath Naur…  …Sam came to the gaping mouth and peered in.  It was dark and hot, and a deep rumbling shook the air.  ‘Frodo!  Master!’ he called.  There was no answer.”
