Cool news today from James T. While I know that the site isn’t fully active yet it will surely rock when it it gets going. I had not heard much in a while. But here is some rather cool news concerning its launch, plus some Sean Connery news, PLUS some Elrond casting!
Xoanon,
I took a gamble that perhaps Mr. Deluca would answer my email…And he did! What a cool guy!
Anyway, I asked him some questions that have been nagging me for some time. I was particularly curious about when New Line will update the official website…
But Mr. Deluca rewarded me with an official denial of ALL Sean Connery rumors, as well as a hint of Elrond casting…
My Original Question:
Hello Mr. Deluca,
I would like to ask you three questions regarding The Lord Of The Rings production:
1. Will you be casting Elrond soon…and if I may ask…do you have any front-runners for the role?
2. Are there any plans to enhance the official website for the production soon?
3. Is there any truth to the rumors of Sean Connery making a cameo in the film? The Witch King, perhaps?
Kind Regards,
James T

No truth to Connery, he’s not in any of the films, in any way. Elrond will be cast soon with an unknown, and the official site will be enhanced really soon.

Lee Talks Sleepy Role
Dont read this if you really dont want to know anything about veteran actor Christopher Lees participation in Tim Burtons Sleepy Hollow.
Okay?
Now, for the rest of you, as you may already know, Lee plays the very small but important part in the film of the man who sends Johnny Depps Ichabod Crane to the small, dark hamlet of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of decapitation murders. While talking to the NY Daily News about the film, Lee was asked about the small part which prompted the prickly answer, “It’s not a small part, it’s a short part. There is an enormous difference.”
Lees next role will not be short. Hes heading down to New Zealand to play Saruman in Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings.

It’s been storming down in Wanaka and Queenstown, with the creek through Queenstown rising three or four metres according to one report, and lightning causing power outages in town. Hikers have had to be airlifted off the trails in the back country. Not great filming weather I should think.

Great. Well I’m happy. More horse news.
The Otago Daily Times found out some great stuff about the auditions for riders and horses going on in the South Island (y’know, where the film crew are at the moment.)
It sounds like the gig of a lifetime!

Ya, boo, Balrogs. What I can’t wait to see on the big screen is the Riders of Rohan. I know they’ve been mustering horses and riders in the far South on NZ to train for the movie, but a friend of mine got into a conversation with some racehorse-owners in a pub here in Auckland. They were saying that they’d had to move their horses from their usual place in the Waikato (remember, those very green plains near Hobbiton?) because the landowner or trainer had taken up a contract to work with horses for Peter Jackson. Lots of horses, they said. About 500.
Further questioning around the horsey community seems to clear things up slightly: a small number of higly-trained horses will be bought ( a friend who was hoping to achieve a highly-trained horse for nothing found this out…) and they will have starring roles in the films; in addition to that, a large number of extras with their own horses will train up in cavalry manouevres. People weren’t sure that this was in fact in the Waikato. Either way, some place must be needed with a great deal of space, privacy and the ability to cater for hundreds of horses and riders, all getting used to working with weapons and so on.
Whether the two cavalry groups from the North and South Islands will ever meet up for some huge battle scenes remains to be seen. Because that area is so much greener than the South Island film locations, I’m beginning to wonder whether some of Rohan will be filmed in the North. Plus the Waikato is where some of the fastest horses in the world are bred, and the whole area is swarming with them.
