Irascian writes: Orlando Bloom stars in the first episode of the second series of Ricky Gervaise’s comedy “Extras” (and Ian McKellen will be appearing in a later show in the series). Bloom plays “himself” as an overly narcisstic movie star, repeating the pattern of the previous series where actors have been happy to send up their perceived public personas. The show airs at 9pm on BBC 2 tonight.

BEND — Ron Meyers isn’t given to long discourses on Hobbits, elves or any other inhabitants of J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination. In fact, the man building The Shire — a new subdivision recalling the mythical home of Tolkien’s most famous characters — hasn’t read the author’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, though he does own the DVDs.
