London, 13 April 2012: HarperCollinsPublishers has acquired exclusive worldwide publishing rights from Warner Bros. Consumer Products for tie-in books to the two highly anticipated films The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, directed by Peter Jackson and productions of New Line Cinema and MGM.
“Inspired by the two films based on The Hobbit, the HarperCollins companion books are a fantastic way for fans of the world of Middle-earth to immerse themselves in the film experience,” said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President of Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “HarperCollins has a strong history with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we know that the detailed tie-in books will bring The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again to life in an in-depth and imaginative way.”

Thomas Kinkade, the ‘Painter of Light’, who died last week at the age of 54, worked one of his first jobs for the Lord of the Rings director Ralph Bakshi. In 1983, five years after making his version of Tolkien’s story, Bakshi directed a movie called Fire and Ice, and Thomas Kinkade, then 25, painted backgrounds for the film. Bakshi talks about the painter here.

Word has reached us on the latest happenings with regard to The Hobbit pub in England. Officials from the Saul Zaentz Company visited the pub a week ago, to ‘assess the situation’; presumably to check exactly what references to The Hobbit – apart from the pub name – there are at the venue, which the SZC claims is breaking licensing laws. Now, in a totally unexpected turn of events, we hear that the SZC have put in an offer to buy the pub and take over management. ‘We just fell in love with the place,’ a representative told us. ‘As we own the rights to the name, it seems right that we should own the pub itself. It would certainly be a solution to the current copyright infringement. Our intention is to use it in our advertising campaign for the movies. We plan to ship the pub and all interior fittings to LA … We hope to have it up and running there in time for the opening of the first Hobbit movie at the end of the year.’
Shipping a building, brick by brick, is certainly costly but not unheard of. The most famous such occurrence was of course the shipping of London Bridge, in 1962, via boat to California and thence to Arizona. There’s no word as yet to the exact location intended for the relocated Hobbit pub; TORn is keeping an eye on events in the hope that it might be a possible location for Oscar happenings next Spring! Meanwhile, we have yet to see how the current owner – and supportive regulars – will respond to this purchase offer. It seems unlikely that they would let their beloved local go without a fight. As ever, we’ll bring you the latest as we hear it!

Just back from a ‘top secret’ assignment with Wellington Weta Workshops, Fiona Thomson is happy to be back behind her work bench in her Glenview shop.
The In Hide Leatherworks owner is still excited at being part of the production of The Hobbit movie but everything she knows about the film and its wardrobe must be a secret till the official release in December.
All she will say about her four months stint in Wellywood is that she was involved in creating clothing and armour.
