At last our four heroes come back to their beloved Shire. One evening they reach the Brandywine Bridge wet and tired, but to their dismay they are denied entrance. The Shire is no longer the place they left behind. Shirriffs guard the gates and uphold new unreasonable laws, ugly buildings sprout everywhere, and there are evil Men in the Shire who are using the Hobbits as slaves. Durin was the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, and in the deeps of time he founded Khazad-dum beneath the Misty Mountains. After the end of the First Age the might of Khazad-dum waxed greatly when it’s people was swelled with refugees from Nogrod and Belegost after the drowning of Beleriand. Behind shut doors the city endured through Saurons dominion of Middle Earth, and was named Moria – the black pit – by the Elves of Eregion. In the middle of the Third Age however, evil things were again stirring in the world, and in Moria the Dwarves delved ever deeper in their search for Mithril. Under the foundations of Barazinbar they at last delved too deep and released the terror that would drive them out of the halls of Durin.[More]
Gandalf and the Hobbits reach Bree and find that while things aren’t quite right, Butterbur seems much the same as he goes on to explain what’s gone wrong. Of course the companions can’t stay long. The hobbits are anxious to get home to a troubled Shire, but for one of them there will be no homecoming. To Frodo the Shire will never again be a place where he can find rest.[More]

The city of Minas Tirith holds its breath waiting for news of the war, while in the Houses of Healing Eowyn rises from her bed. The concerned Warden takes her to see the Steward of the City. Faramir is soon struck by her beauty, but he also perceives that here is one greatly troubled by grief and unrest. Eowyn for her part sees in Faramir both a gentle spirit and a great warrior and slowly hope is kindled in her heart.[More]
