We have added a new session time and day for our weekly Hall of Fire homepage chats, beginning this Sunday, July 23. That’s right! You now have a choice of sessions: our regular chat held Saturdays at 5:30 pm EDT, or our NEW EuroHOF on Sundays at 1800 GMT (1900 CET, 2:00 pm EDT). Frode and Leo will be your moderators on Sundays. The topic will be the same for both sessions each weekend, so pick the one that’s most convenient for you! (Diehards are more than welcome to attend both, lol!) As always, Hall of Fire chats are held in #thehalloffire.

Hullo,

The Hall of Fire is readied again with a Tolkien character topic. This time ’round we’ll be taking a close look at another of the Nine Walkers, Legolas.
Legolas Greenleaf: Elf of Mirkwood

A fast friend to dwarf, human, and hobbit, Legolas is a character to warm the heart. Quick and deadly with knife or bow, this good elf was also a keen lover of all things forest. What details are known of this great elf? Do you have any favorite Legolas quotes, scenes, or deeds from LotR? What is his fate at the end of Middle-earth’s history?

Ok well maybe not… but here it goes!

Elves, Men, Death and Tolkien

In Tolkien’s world, the contrast between the fate of Elves and the fate of Humans is dramatic. Together we will explore the differences and ponder the implications behind them. How can death be a gift given to Men by Ilúvatar? Many people in Western society would consider death to be more of a curse then a blessing, yet Tolkien repeatedly refers to death as a ‘gift’.

What is the nature of the fate of these two races? What can we learn from their differences? How do their deaths reflect their lives? These and other questions will be explored at our next Hall of Fire chat.
