By Order of Proclamation from The Hall of Fire, it is hereby decreed that The Fellowship of the Ring will be discussed in depth chapter by chapter, to commence the weekend of February 17 and 18!
Pretty exciting stuff!! Join us as we venture together through Tolkien’s own Lord of the Rings, beginning with the Fellowship. Every other weekend we will discuss a chapter of the story, right up until the first film comes out in December. The agenda for discussions is wide open, and first time chatters as well as first time readers of Tolkien are welcome to attend. In between chats there is time for reading each chapter, and folks are welcome to jump in at any time throughout the year.
These book discussions will not conflict with our currently scheduled debates, which will continue on their twice monthly cycle. That makes Hall of Fire active every weekend, so you’re sure to find a burning Tolkien discussion in a time zone near you every Saturday and Sunday for a long time to come here at TheOneRing.net.
Should things that Tolkien left enigmatic and unexplained remain mysterious? Should there even be speculation about these things?
Many’s the time I have wanted more detail and information about creatures, characters, races, places, and events in Middle-earth. After reading The Lord of the Rings the first time, I remember the sorrow and joy that came with its ending, and the longing for more. If you’ve read The History of Middle-earth, or other similar Tolkien Enterprises publications, then you have seen a bit deeper than others into the mind which spun such fantastic yarn. But perhaps it’s better not to know that Strider was first called Trotter… or what the fate of Middle-earth is in the end. Some mysteries are better left as such… What do you think?
Bring your thoughts down to our next Hall of Fire!

You can be a Hall of Fire Moderator!
That’s right folks, you can run a Hall of Fire! How you ask???
Send us your topics! If we pick your idea for discussion, you will be our guest co-moderator for that weekend. You can help us run the Saturday or Sunday chat, or both! Of course, you will not be required to work the chat; this is our way of honoring those of you who take the time to put a topic together.
TheBursar sent us this e-mail with news of his impending return to Barli’s : )
Guess What??? I’m still alive, but have little money for Internet right now… fortunately, come about… ohh I’d say Thursday, that should change. I bought a computer, and will be getting net access in my room, so I can talk with all you wonderful people again. I love this place… Charleston… er… actually Goose Creek, SC is a great place.
BTW, did you guys check out the LOTR article and pics in the latest Entertainment Weekly ?? Whoa!!!! Wanna see the Balrog….. WANNA SEE THE BALROG!!!!
Anyway, make preparations for the triumphant Return of TheBursar, for I’m a-comin’ home!! And there was much rejoicing……(yay)
The Hall of Fire is ready for debate! This time we hope to raise a little steam. Our topic:
How and why has no other author done what JRR Tolkien did?
Clearly biased of course but perhaps Tolkien is not your favorite author and you have a barrage of arguments as to why some one else takes preference? Surely in the history of literature SOMEONE has outdone Professor Tolkien or not?
Come tell us what you think on Saturday or Sunday, January 27 and 28. Times below.

Hey all you Barlimaniacs!
It is I, your long lost comrade, TheBursar! I apologize for my long silence, but things have been EXTREMELY busy. I am the bearer of good tidings, however. This is the last week! On Jan. 5, I pass-in-review, or graduate. My mom decided to come up, so I’m happy.
I had liberty Christmas Day so I went to the movie theater. I saw ‘Castaway’. Wow. Pretty good. No LoTR trailer though. Saw previews for Pearl Harbor and D&D. Must see D&D Need Fantasy Fix
Enclosed is that so longed for picture of me in uniform; I hope you all like it. That’s my Dress Blue uniform I look better in my working blues. One day I’ll send a picture of that.
In two weeks I’ll be in Charleston. Yay! But in the immediate future, tomorrow night is BattleStations, an all night event that tests EVERYTHING I have learned. I’ll have fun.
My next letter will probably be from Charleston. I miss y’all and will be back on-line soon. Promise!
